Fresh from the opening of his new album Face to Face and the opening of Les Miserables, where he's performing the role that made him an international musical theatre star, Hayden Tee shares a video for Javert's big Les Mis number, Stars. Filmed at The Civic, the video shows transformation of Javert through the years, utilising skills from Hayden's second career as a make up artist.
"Javert goes through a huge physical transformation during the performance of Les Miserables, and it's usually something that happens hidden away backstage, I thought it'd be fun to show the transformation in this video for 'Stars'," said Hayden. "It was really special to film it at The Civic while I'm home."
The Civic theatre is one of very few operating atmospheric theatres, I feel very lucky playing Javert and to look out into a theatre and actually see stars, I wanted to share that feeling somehow.”
Face to Face includes famous numbers from Hayden's starring roles in Matilda the Musical, Les Miserables, 1776, and expands his repertoire with songs by Jason Robert Brown, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Adam Guettel, Kander & Ebb and more. With Hayden's unmistakeable voice backed by a symphony orchestra, this album brings power and nuance to some of the most beautiful songs from musical theatre's so-called 'bad guys'.
"These are all characters who are rebels and antagonists, some may say villains," says Hayden. "But none of these characters see themselves this way. I have inhabited many of these roles on stage and I feel a very strong affinity with the others whose songs I sing on this album."
It has been a meaningful time for Hayden, performing in New Zealand for the first time in more than a decade.
"I knew I wanted to release this album while I was on home soil," he said. "I feel like I have finally grown into myself and a big part of that is my iwi and kiwi identity."
"New Zealanders have been so supportive and welcoming, the cast and crew at Les Miserables at The Civic are treating me like family. The audience response to Les Miserables and the two singles from the album have been overwhelming. My heart is full and it is all because of the warmth of my fellow kiwis."
