Greatest Soul Singer? Posted: Wed Jul 20, 2005 4:43 pm I had been wondering how people felt about this for some time, so I thought I'd ask you folk. My feelings are that the Greatest MALE soul singer of all time is AL GREEN My vote for the greatest FEMALE soul singer of all time goes to NINA SIMONE Although Aretha Franklin is UP THERE...number two perhaps Just wondered how others who are fans of this genre, feel .... |

RE: Greatest Soul Singer? Posted: Wed Jul 20, 2005 9:30 pm I guess Genre differentiation could be dubious but I'd chuck in James Brown and Solomon Burke with a little Mavis Staples and Chaka Khan. I also quite like Bill Withers although that may destroy what little credibility I have left. |

RE: Greatest Soul Singer? Posted: Sun Jul 31, 2005 5:09 pm It's a little difficult to define a "soul" singer. I guess it's something you either know when you hear it...or you don't! James Brown, for instance, can be defined as a soul singer but he's nothing like Al Green. Sometimes soul singers are misidentified spiritual singers. Nina Simone is someone I would say is a spiritual singer. Although she has plenty of "soul". On the whole, these singers stand alone in their craft. They sing from the soul and require little, if no, back-up. They reach out to you, they touch you and affect you. They usually endure for many years. Aretha Franklin is probably the greatest living soul singer in my opinion. |
