NZ Music vs Overseas Music

I know you can't really control this, but some of the discussions are boring or not really relevant to anything. eg. 'Santa' appeared a few days ago, 'Phoenix film company hiring crew', is this supposed to be a music site?

How about this for size then? NZ music vs Overseas music...

I personally think that there is no music out there has more style and soul than NZ music, and I'm not just saying that because I'm from here. I love all types of music from overseas, but regardless of what genre is being played, NZ music always has that 'NZ feel' to it.

I've never been able to quite put my finger on it, but there is something about NZ music that makes it instantly recognisable. As soon as you see a music video on the TV, or hear a new song on the radio that you have never seen or heard before, you can always tell straight away if it is one of ours or not.

NZ has created some great music- music that is even capable of rivalling some of the top bands from overseas. I'm not just talking about the mainstream music either (Tadpole, Fur Patrol etc), I'm talking about all of it- mainstream, underground and otherwise!

As said before, I love all types of music from overseas, but the one thing I can't stand is how some genres of music from overseas all sound the same even when different bands and vocalists are performing the music. Most NZ artists create music that sounds completely different from the next artist, even in cases when it is obviously influenced by music from overseas.

Rock on NZ music!!

(btw I, like many others, are sick of all this rap is better than rock talk and vice versa- if you want to start debating about that all over again, I suggest you make a post in the what is up with all this rap forum, and not in this one)

nice discussion topic...

Well the thing is, not ALL New Zealand music is good. It's generalised to say that nz music rocks.

I mean, don't get me wrong, some of my favourite artists are from New Zealand. Pluto, Salmonella Dub, Evermore, Phoenix Foundation, The Clean, The Mint Chicks... but I don't like them because they're from New Zealand. I like them because I've found a piece of myself in their art, and when you relate to something, you appreciate it more.

Sure, there may be some different sounds in New Zealand that you probably don't find anywhere else in the world, but then again there probably some different sounds you find in America that you don't find anywhere else in the world (I'm guessing the very undergroung stuff).

However, yea I guess if you say that the good, unique stuff from NZ vz the good stuff from the world... I'd say NZ!

Also, I think the only reason you think overseas stuff sounds the same is because we're only exposed to the mainstream the send to us, I bet theres heaps of actually good bands from overseas that we would appreciate. But in New Zealand, a lot of the music we hear is quite local, so we get a lot more unique sounds. Thats why is probably its easier to get on radio or tv here than overseas, too.

yea, what does everyone else think?

kiwi music has a lot to offer and rocks out with the best of them, the only thing the lacks is good production.

Sorry to sound rude, but most NZ Music is pure shit, and the music scene over all is crap compared to other countries.

There we go I said it.

yay for phatgurl, for coming up with topics again (this site was getting boring for a while)

but anyway...
i do think that a lot of the NZ music we're getting on tv, radio, etc is pure shit, but there's loads of underground/local/unsigned/uknown bands out there who make better music.

events/competitions like the rockquest, for example, are great, but theyre picking out winners that sounds like what the industry already have. like, the Christchurch regional winners (id use them as an example because i live in christchurch) last year, Overdrive, sounds just like any pop punk/Goonightnurse/48 may-ish band. well yeah...i think i lost my point somewhere there, but what im trying to say is that record companies or whatever tend to sign and promote bands that sounds like what we already have, instead of something new and different, and there's a lot of bands like these around. That's why you get a shitload of bands that sound exactly the same- like goodnight nurse and 48 may, and i personally think they sound exactly the same, oh and that new life story band sounds the same as them too.

but yeah, nz music would be shit unless they try looking around and promoting something new
