RE: Are cover bands ruining creativity? Posted: Tue Dec 6, 2005 1:35 pm I didnt wanna provoke anything but I gotta say this... I tend to dislike mainstream music, though I dont feel the need to go to great lengths to avoid falling into a so called 'arena'. A lot of mainstream music is good, some of it great, but any aesthetic relating to this music is destroyed as soon as it becomes popular. There is an idea about what mainstream actually is. Today it has become a 3 minute salute prescribed by radio for a quick fix... I am occasionally not happy with some of the stuff I write but that doesnt mean I need to slag off everyone else that dont conform to my ideas. What does make me want to slag off others is the blantant perversion that is so common nowadays in mainstream songwriting. Do people not want to progress?? I mean what the f**k is going on? Back in the Baroque and Romantic days mainstream was epic 2 hour concerts, perfectly orchestrated. If anything, mainstream has cut the meat off all things true and left us the bones... Mainstream has never set out to be complex, that would defeat the purpose of it.. its simply a quick fix to temporarily relieve the ailments of everyday living.... if that can totally cure you then fine, simple minds require simple stimulus. I really dont think those are valid explanations of the categories you are suggesting Julius... nice site i must say. R.I.P. Atdi Getting a bit off the plot.. sorry bout that This message was edited by faron on Tue Dec 6, 2005 1:40 pm. |

RE: Are cover bands ruining creativity? Posted: Tue Dec 6, 2005 2:37 pm Firstly I like what you wrote - I could be guilty of a generalisation. You seem intelligent and I like your style. I guess this could go on for eva so Ill leave it there and get back to the studio JULIUS MUSIC WORLD WIDE!!! http://www.betarecords.com/julius This message was edited by julius on Tue Dec 6, 2005 2:40 pm. |

RE: Are cover bands ruining creativity? Posted: Tue Dec 6, 2005 4:15 pm yeah, it could go on forever, plus im getting off the point a bit. Despite my gripe about mainstream, I try and respect all forms of music, its just a shame that exploitation ruins ideas, esp. beautiful ones... How many times have you thought up a melody or riff, then two weeks down the track realize that its been done somewhere before, but you only knew that subconciously. When you were writing it, you had no intention of ripping off something... Sometimes I think it becomes harder and harder to write new fresh original songs because so many possibilities have been used (or completely raped). When this happens I try and start listening to a genre of complete and opposite taste to what I'm used to and it helps alot, truth is, the possibilities are endless, its getting into that frame of mind of writing where there are no boundaries that is hard... R.I.P. Atdi Oh, and by the way.. , I just picked up an album from an artist called 'Sufjan Stevens'. The album is called 'Illinoise'. I thoroughly recomend it for inspiration esp. the first song 'Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois'. Well, thats my two cents for the day. RE: Are cover bands ruining creativity? Posted: Tue Dec 6, 2005 4:49 pm if I may say so, I think you are worrying needlessly, faron. Ultimately, you gotta play what you have to..whether that be covers or not, and write what you have to... whether it be mainstream or not. The REAL comercial types out there (Say, Dianne Warren, Mutt Lange, Bryan Adams, etc etc) feel about as passionate about the music they write as anyone. What they do is own it...by which I mean they have probably had a revelation that goes like this 'This is the music I write best, and enjoy writing the best, and lots of people seem to like it. Why change that? why try and kid myself otherwise?' and if someone like me was to say 'God, that "everything I do I do for you" songs really sucks' then they would probably just shrug and walk away, and not give it another thought. y'know? |

RE: Are cover bands ruining creativity? Posted: Tue Dec 6, 2005 5:12 pm yeah, you are right, I tend to where my heart on my sleeve when it comes to writing and I think I do worry too much about what other peoples interpretations might be (aside from what they actually think of the music)but I know what you're saying... Out of everyone I think the lyricist has the hardest job! |
