Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Mon Nov 14, 2005 7:47 am As I indicated above, I am a brand new forum member from the United States. I want to make sure that I abide by list rules before I go on and talk about bands that I like, exciting projects that I am involved in on the web, etc. I do want to let you know, however, that I am a 4+ Star Webcaster/Music Interviewer with currently over 1,200 music lovers worldwide that listen to my broadcast via the internet every month. I won't give any more details than that until I am invited to. I really am a music FANATIC, and would love to find out more about NZ music through this site so that I can add some NZ bands to make my show even more international in flavor. I play a mix of progressive rock, progressive bluegrass (newgrass) - a type of music that was created in the USA and has most of its fanbase in the USA, alternative rock, and folk/rock. This mix sounds odd, but it really does work for a lot of people with big ears and open musical minds! I am very glad to be here and look forward to learning a lot about the New Zealand music scene from y'all. Steve Sikes-Nova Tidewater, Virginia, USA |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Tue Nov 15, 2005 8:50 am The Cynic suggests Ishtar who in their heavier mode bear resemblence to Dream Theater Ward 10 who are a progressive metal outfit. they play one song that is 45 minutes long. Exiter and Redmore also come to mind as bands a prog listener might like. Then there was headz and bodz, who were progressive but suck worse than a two dollar hooker. Go to the artist section of this brilliamt site. |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Wed Nov 16, 2005 12:57 am Thanks for the suggestions, Thomas! My taste in prog runs to the more keyboard driven, orchestral type (Yes) and the acoustic-influenced type (Strawbs). Got any NZ bands for me along these lines? I will check out the artists section as you suggest. I will avoid "headz and bodz", however. Thanks again, Steve Sikes-Nova Worldwide Internet Radio from the USA! |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Thu Nov 17, 2005 2:18 pm Thanks for the referral, sdir; I checked out the download available at fideleo.com. Even though they certainly are "proggy", they are too aggressively so for my internet radio mix. I am looking for NZ bands that, again, are progressive but more orchestral in nature. For example, "To Be Over" (Relayer) by Yes has some aggressive passages but, overall, is more melodic and 'orchestral', with excellent harmonies. Steve |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Fri Nov 18, 2005 12:27 am Thanks, schmoove, for the link to the Battle Circus site. I loved their flash menu with the old-timey theme! "Send in the Clones" reminded me much more of Queen then it did of Yes, however. And I must have totally missed the piano. More like what I am looking for but not quite... I am also looking for acoustic bands with banjo and/or fiddle leads, and alternative bands like Grandaddy. Thanks for you assistance, everyone! Steve Sikes-Nova "Newgrass, Prog & More!" Web Radio |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Sat Dec 3, 2005 1:02 pm Hey dude, you should check out 'The New Caledonia'. These guys are a progressive type outfit from hamilton, with a little more time they could potentially revolutionize prog music in NZ. I think the site address is www.thenewcaledonia.com. Not too sure if there are any audio links. Just leave all your preconceptions of prog rock at the door. |

RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Sat Dec 3, 2005 3:50 pm I checked out The New Caledonia's website and wasleft with a good first impression. They did not have an audio download so I will contact the band directly to hear their sound. Here is the band's list of bands that they like; I like many of the same bands: "BANDS (We Love) Jeff Buckley Jimi Hendrix the Mars Volta Meshuggah Tool Tortoise Flat Earth Society Mr Bungle Dillenger Escape Plan Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum Fantômas Bohren & Der Club of Gore 1QA This Night Creeps Coldplay RadioHead" Thanks again for the info, Faron. RE: Hello! from Progressive Music Fanatic from the USA! Posted: Mon Dec 5, 2005 7:23 pm Hey there. Not sure if this is going to be the style you're after, but you could check out our band OOS. www.oosband.com Click on the Free Music button. I'd say probably "You" would be the track to listen to - "About Can't" is a bit more straight rock, but with an alternative edge. "Pamper Child" is probably too punk for what you're looking for. We've got a reasonably wide range of styles, so if you're interested send us an email (you can find contact details on the site), and we can look at getting you some mixes of other songs. Cheers for even taking the time to look over some of the music out here! OOS This message was edited by OOS_band on Mon Dec 5, 2005 7:24 pm. |
