Mandolin teacher needed... Posted: Fri Jan 13, 2006 12:21 pm Hi there. I'm a student in Dunedin with my own brand new shiny mandolin. I'm looking for someone who can teach me a thing or two while I am in town. I play guitar so I am not exactly a beginner, but I am new to the mandolin. Is there anyone out there who can teach me? Or maybe you know someone... Any info would be appreciated. |

RE: Mandolin teacher needed... Posted: Fri Jan 13, 2006 6:24 pm Wrong town and I don't teach anymore but here's a couple of tips to get you started. A mandolin is tuned in fifths with a 14 3/4 scale, tuned exactly the same as a violin with the same scale. To a guitar player that isn't so important- this is. A FIFTH IS AN UPSIDE DOWN FOURTH IN RELATIVE TERMS. Think bout this G,D,A,E, vs E, A, D, G. think of an open position GMaj then reverse it losing what the little fingers are normally doing, move that down a set of strings and you've got C Maj. A number of chords fall into this mirror thing easily. Think bout how you'd normally make a D maj, you've lost two important strings right? add a 5 up top on the G (thickest string) and you've got D Maj (2, open, open, 2) Am headed for home, might post some more later. Question to the moderators or anyone who knows if I tab some chord shapes out on paint will muzic.net's forum support them? Am guessing not but thought I'd ask. |

You'll need to put the pics up on something like: www.imageshack.us www.photobucket.com and then they'll give you links to copy and paste into here to insert your image. Keep in mind the maximum width of 400 pixels for the image. |

RE: Mandolin teacher needed... Posted: Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:55 pm awesome, thanks Kraven. Will post up some mandolin chord charts later. Its not a hugely difficult instrument to learn if you can already play guitar- not saying I'm Bill Monroe on it- but with a handful of chords and a couple of hours its possible to suss it out. |

RE: Mandolin teacher needed... Posted: Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:42 pm Great. Thanks guys. I have printed out lots of chord info and scales and some tunes and I'm doing pretty well so far. Too bad its so hard to find someone down here though, it would be nice to have a teacher. |
