CDR Music Piracy Levies Posted: Thu Jan 9, 2003 8:08 pm It was announced (yet again) in the news today that Canadians will be paying more for their blank CDR media. Since the year 2000 people in Canada have been forced to pay a levy of 5.2c (Canadian) per recordable CD, a fee which rose to 21c in 2001 and now the proposal for 2003 is a hike to 59c. The goal here is to protect the music industry from piracy and recording companies each get their share of the levies collected. For the consumer, it means they're now paying more for CDR than their neighbours in the US, *BUT* they can now legally copy audio CDs for their personal use! This system is reported to be in place in about 40 countries and fortunately (or unfortunately) NZ isn't one of them. If you're only use for CDR discs is for storing data (we all make backups, right?) then you'd have to pay the levy too - because "all consumers who by CDR media are music pirates" (not a quote, but it's what the recording industry is thinking). What does everyone here think about this? |
