RE: Tabs or Chords? Posted: Fri Apr 14, 2006 7:33 pm Written Notation. I've yet to attend a recording session or fill in gig where the writer/band leader has provided TAB TAB is cheap and a shortcut, for starters wheres the Rhythm? or is that not important? or do you only learn what you have a recording of? in which case where does transcription and ear practice come in? I know it looks boring, and time consuming but the work thats put in is never lost and has huge benefits across all sorts of Musical situations. As far as this pathetic "you'll lose your originality" arguement put up against it, consider this, would you consider not learning to read and write English? That anyone can possibly be behaving sanely to not learn the written form of the Language they profess to love... Do a comparision, what work is available to those who read and those who don't?Why immeaditly lose avenues of Musical Expression simply because you can't read. Employers also use it as a guide, ie:whose serious about there instrument and whose not. Written Notation |

RE: Tabs or Chords? Posted: Sat Apr 15, 2006 12:06 am The rhythm is transcribed with proper (non-cheap) tablature. Get a program called guitar pro 5, it has both tablature and standart notation options, a good way to learn both, as well as most guitar theory resources (scales, modes, etc...). While musical scores are the way to go if you want to get into advansed theory, tablature has one advantage - it is more freely available from the internet and anywhere else you can think of, while sheet music is something you usually have to pay for. Like I said, it's good to learn both. This message was edited by grim_entropy on Sat Apr 15, 2006 12:09 am. |

RE: Tabs or Chords? Posted: Sat Apr 15, 2006 3:17 pm learn music (chords if thats what u like to call it), once you've got that, you;ll know how to read tabs anyways learn all the scales, different rythmns, listen to different music eg jazz, latin, those bass line are really cool, and if you wanna become a serious bassist, the scales, chord changes and alternative bass styles are vital and you can't get those just by reading tab thats my 2c good luck, the bass is a f***ing awesome instrument, gr8 choice |

RE: Tabs or Chords? Posted: Sat Apr 15, 2006 7:06 pm //Freely available Not always the best thing though. and its ripping off the original writer innit? I fail to see the relevance of learning this "TAB with Rhythm", go the whole hog Notation's been round for a few hundred years, and theres plenty of good reasons why that is so. It dont have to be boring, cop Modal studies, superBad when your learning the Bass, which as tttredfluk says is top choice. |

RE: Tabs or Chords? Posted: Thu Apr 20, 2006 2:44 pm Learning to play by ear is an invalueable skill, especially if you are wanting to play in a band. |
