Supporting NZ Music?
Posted: Sat Oct 11, 2003 10:36 am
I came across this editors letter from a Space Producer in this weeks TV Guide:

'Space Producer Answers Critic'

A reader in the TV Guide recently complained about the type of music on Space (TV2). In this year's series we had 70 New Zealand bands perform in our studio, played over 100 NZ music videos and interviewed over 50 NZ bands. These ranged from Blindspott to The Brunettes, from Dunedin reggae to Hastings metal. I suggest if the viewer did not find something to their liking, perhaps their problem is not with Space but with NZ music.
Mitchell Hawkes (Space Producer)

---------

Come on Space, we all know you can do better than that!

muzic.net.nz has over 1000 artists on its artist pages - Space has only had 70 NZ bands perform in their studios and have only interviewed 50 NZ bands. You've got a long way to go Space, before you can convince us that you truly support NZ music.

Space runs for the majority of the year, for 2 hours once a week. While not all of its content relates to music, it doesn't seem right to send in such a letter - there's so much more to NZ music than that.

What do you all think about this?

well supporting Nz Music can start with simply buying our music NOT BURNING IT and advertising it, Flaunting it to other countries. I myself show ppl music from NZ to USA friends and make them jelious that they wont get there hands on the real stuff heheh. Every dollar that you spend on the Nz music industry helps them out in the long run. Space sez Space ... they managed a good show .. annoying hosts usually good music a new Nz band on it each time and managed to show just about no images of real space on it. Go NZ Music....

Yea... im done Razz

when it come to the end of the day, Space like any other program has to be a viable entity. We have to remember that their are business men (and/or woman) running space and programs like it in the end of the day. The producers are just trying to keep a viable program running for the better of themselves and for their viewers. If there were to many people that disliked the program it would be canned. We all know TVNZ are the DEVIL atfer devouring MAX TV but i think that they are doing a good job. and their stats for the amount of NZ music they put in their show i think is awesome. COuld they really fit alll 1000 artists on this websites dataase? get real. Space played a whole lotta stuff i didn't like but hey played heaps of stuff that i LOVE and has shown me some bands/artists that id never seen before and now i am a keen follower of. I'm dragging on so i'll stop

Long live SPace,
and good on COKE for backing it.

I agree with moffatt that it's unrealistic to see all 1000 bands on space. But if they actually used the time available we could see so much more local content. For example, the last show was taken up with tours of Hamilton and Rotorua. Not that I have a problem with those towns, but this is not "Getaway", and we get enough touristy crap on tv anyway. And their is a lot of down time where nothing really happens on space. I'm sure that they could fit in at least another 5 video's or live performances into their show. They could also do genre shows of local bands. Imagine watching space one night and seeing live performances from Kitsch, Ill Semantics, 4 Man Bob and Foamy Ed!
Now that would be promoting nz music positively.

Everyone has different views on this .. and I'll admit the reason why I first made the post was to see what healthy debating could be started from it.

I don't expect Space to showcase all 1000+ bands on our artist pages .. I'm just saying there's more artists out there than '70 bands perform in our studio' .. 'interviewed over 50 NZ bands' - which doesn't even dent the reality of what NZ music is out there.

It'd be good to see some more not-so-mainstream bands on the show, give everyone a chance to see more of the diverse range of NZ music we have.

couldn't agree more shade. their are way more bands out there that haven't got the media coverage that they deserve. i think we can all name a heap of bands that, if they got some coverage, could push on well known bands over and share some limelight, but it is a huge advantage if you happen to be based in auckland.
