RE: guitar people Posted: Tue Oct 10, 2006 8:34 am a lot of lead guitarists like to use thin strings to make bends easier, so if your guitar is tuned down (like a lot of metal/rock these days) i guess that is why the strings might look real loose. |

RE: guitar people Posted: Tue Oct 10, 2006 10:15 am There is no one answer to that but I would say what you are most likely seeing is a combination of vibrato and players hitting the strings with a bit of force. most guitarists I would say still use 009-042 gauge strings, which will bend very easily. Moving up to a 10 gauge is not that noticably different. Some guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix used much thicker gauges 13 on the E presumably going down to a 56 or possibly 60. SRV used to downtune a half step but basically you are talking bout a guy with very strong hands. Eddie Van Halen is another one who tuned down a half step, for most the David Lee Roth era anyway. I'm not convinced what you'd be seeing (sorry haven't bothered to look myself- on dialup connection) in from players tuning down to drop C cause typically those guys use either a hybrid gauge or just a heavier gauge. Having a floating Floyd Rose trem on a guitar will give you less tension to fight with when grabbing the strings than a standard trem or stop tailpiece. However when thinking of stop tailpieces a Les paul has a string length 24.75 inch (as opposed to 'fender' scale 25.5) less length across the string means it'll be a little looser at the same ptich, also with les pauls the angled headstock (approx 14 degreees) gives a nice breaking angle, taking away a little tension too. Yngwie Malmsteen uses 8 gauge strings and scallops his fretboards for more control of vibrato. in putting grooves into the neck he is making his job a little harder in pushing the string a little further but the end result looks and sounds cool. Finally technique... are you vibratoing from your fingers or wrist? how many fingers have you got behind the bend? have you practiced stuf like pulling the bend then pushing it, vibratoing with each seperate finger (to build strength) etc. good players have great technique and a lot of strength in the right places. |

RE: guitar people Posted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 8:40 am yeah same, i prefer thicker strings so they can be bent and beaten without snapping. |

RE: guitar people Posted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 10:44 am 009- 042 on the wolfgang and rg550 on the warlock I think I have 012-056? hybrid set cause it gets tuned d to d. acoustics are 11 gauge. You can beat the shit out of 009s the only thing you're not going to get is as thick a sound as with a heavier gauge, is a matter of knowing their breaking point though. |
