Hum - What do you think? Posted: Sat Nov 8, 2003 7:44 pm Friday night saw TV1 try to gain back viewers under the age of 50 by starting their own "alternative" music show called "Hum". Francesca Rudkin hosts the show which starts about 11.00pm on friday nights. The advertising for the show wasn't great (I only accidently found it by flicking through the tv guide). While one could argue that to call the music alternative might be fabricating somewhat, it was great to see four nz artists on there. Pacifier, Fur Patrol, Ben King and Nathan Haines all had video's on. It would be nice to see more than 4 in an hour but TVNZ have got to start somewhere and any air time is positive. Good on TVNZ for trying a music show while space is having a break (let's just hope it lasts). |

RE: Hum - What do you think? Posted: Sun Nov 9, 2003 11:09 am I've noticed that the name 'Hum' is causing some disturbances among the local music industry. In Wellington there is a great NZ music magazine called A Low Hum, and the person who runs this magazine owns the website www.hum.co.nz - he even has hum on his numberplates. The original concept for choosing this name was based around a music show featuring non-mainstream music called 'HumTV'.. and this guy has nothing to do with the TV series by the same name. Along with this, there is also a band in Wellington called Hum. More info can be found here: http://www.tvone.co.nz/best/story.html?story_hum.inc It states: 'Hum, a new music video series showcasing music videos from the less mainstream end of the spectrum' and goes on to say 'It will feature music ranging from veteran alternative acts such as Radiohead, Beck and REM, to dance and hip-hop stars like Moby and Outkast, modern country artists like Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, and newer bands including the White Stripes and the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.' Correct me if I'm wrong, but since when were Radiohead, Beck, REM and The White Stripes from the less mainstream end of the spectrum. Would as many people turn up the White Stripes gig recently if they were less mainstream? Also - since when was Moby a hip-hop star? This has caused lots of debating in the NZmusic.com forums: http://www.nzmusic.com/topic.cfm?i=6792&show=latest |
