Where do you jam in Welly?
Posted: Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:11 pm
I just moved to Welly from London, before that Perth, and want to know where you all jam/practice/rehearse here?

As far as I know so far, Toi Pōneke on Abel Smith St. is IT. Are there more places, and any with PA supplied?

Where do bands meet, hang out, drink and play music when they aren't gigging? Are we in need of this kind of place;

5 or more soundproofed rooms with
Quality PA systems with
Ability to record your session
Space to hang out etc
Consumables like strings, picks on sale
Equipment hire- PA, amps, cabs etc
A place for the band/musician community

Is it here already and I haven't found it?

There used to be one i think in newtown. But they charged a million dollars per 1/2 hour session so consequently no one could afford to use it.

I think the only option is either the abel smith street place or theres a studio that also offers jam rooms.

Most people i know use their houses/flats with insulation and have a continuous war with the totally unreasonable noise control part of the wellington city council. And by unreasonable i mean instead of standing on the boundary of the property and measuring the noise, they actually come onto your property and listen right outside the window/walls and deem the noise there to be "unaceptable" and issue a notice.

Ill stop rambling now.

God dammit.

We were setting up such a place - found a good venue - which of course got turned into apartments, which is exactly what happened to The Factory (Newtown space, which acteally wasn't that expensive @ $10 an hour - think about it 3 hours between 4 guys is only $7.50 each a week)... Anyway, we gave up after every other venue we looked at was waaay over priced, and the others were dive's not close to the city.

We now have a sweet pad above New World on Willis st - it's a permanent setup, so there's no hiring going on.

I know there are a couple of places around being run by recording studios. I think there's one out at lower hutt (heard an ad on the radio and it had a 566 something or rather number) - I think there's also one being run out of the old Marmalade B studio (which used to be The Audio Institute) up on Victoria St... I think that's still going .... And i *think* - *maybe* that Inca studio on Martin Square (down by Shell on Taranaki st) is still doing that type of thing...

But regardless of all that, there's definitely no definitive space with a hang out and a supply shop .... if only someone had $50 000 to invest in such a project (actually you'd probably need $100 000 - that would include building all the rooms in the venue, and covering the venue rent while the business was built up to a sustainable level) to pull it off properly...
