People need to stop getting drunk outside this great venue and
start to appreciate the awesome music.

Too many people come for the 'scene' and not the music.
Ellen Melville Hall is a mean venue and shouldn't have to get shut down because of stupid fuckwits drinking piss and causing shit outside.

Don't bring your alcohol/drugs/Scene kid attitude this Saturday.
(This is one of the remainding All Age venues so keep that in mind)

Soo this Saturday come in and enjoy the music;
eg. The Jonestown Syndicate,Antagonist etc.

The scenesters don't care if they close the venue down because they don't actually go inside. Meanwhile there's a couple of hundred kids inside watching the bands who are there for the music. If the venue gets closed down, the scene kids will move back to Aotea Square which is still council land so I don't see how there problem will be solved.

Yeah, there are rumors of the venue closing down but these are only rumors.

I organised Punk vs Emo a few weeks a go where some freshly planted shrubs were pulled from the ground and thrown in the fountain after a full day of planting. We only found this out through an email from a contractor to the council, which was sent in to a friend of mine who hosts a show on ALT TV. The council never mentioned anything when I spoke to them about returning the bond. As far as I'm concerned the show was pretty successful with no problems. We had 5 security guards on the night and the police came in to check during the last band (when it was most full) and were happy with the way the event was. But it's pretty disappointing to hear of shit happening which people have associated to our show after forking out hundreds for security to prevent what goes on inside and outside the venue.

Its crazy how hateful people are towards "scene kids". I was walking to my apartment to pick up some things for the Punk vs Emo show, 2 hours before the show started and a group of emo kids and punk kids walked past me saying how "scene" I was and abusing me. I suppose I did look scene... had a black t-shirt on and chuck taylors. When I came back to the venue, they were hanging outside in Freyberg Square, two hours before the show started. I stood on the door for most of the night and never saw them come in.

If the council were looking at improving the situation at Ellen Melville Hall, the first thing they should do is get rid of the armor guard security they make the hirer use but make it compulsory to hire some popper event security. The council provided security charge an extra $112 for someone to turn up (unless they forget to book them in which has happened to me more than once and they've had to refund me after the event) 3 hours before the end of the show and check no one has any alcohol inside the venue. They then stand around till the end to close up, which involves closing a door behind you (no keys required or anything).

For $112, you can hire 2 security guards from another company who'll stand at the door and check peoples bags for alcohol, make sure everyone who goes through the door has paid, break up any fights and if there is anyone there who's causing trouble, they'll kick them out. The council provided security guard does none of this.

I did a show in May and there was a fight. I told the security guard (provided by the council) and he told me they're not "allowed" to get involved and they have to phone the police. So between me and the sound guy, we dragged the guys fighting outside and 20 minutes later, a paddy waggon arrives, 3 or so cop cars all full with police, march up the stairs to a fight which had ended long before with no trace of the guys involved.

So there's my 2 cents

Man that sucks to hear. It ruins it for the kids inside who are genuinely there for the bands.

They're probably the same people who are supposedly against other forms of discrimination too.

It's pretty uncalled for when people are yelling shit at you in public.

I think anomisity towards "scene" kids comes from the fact that a lot of them just look so silly. I see kids on the bus, all skulls & studded stuff, huge fringe over their face, "woe is me" expression, all that... yet they all sit there and gossip away like prissy mall-rats, "OMG like totally, did she really say that!?".

It's all good though. Every teen generation goes through the phase of expressing themselves through their clothes and music, it's part of the path of self discovery we all go through. "Scenes" will always bicker amongst themselves... even in the rock n roll days you had different types of kids.

There's pretty much no point in trying to stand out with crazy hair, clothes and piercings these days, because it's all been done. When everybody starts going against the grain there's nothing left to rebel against.

And myspace/bebo hasn't helped. All those stupid self-taken images from an angle with that stupid pouty look just makes me slap their over-contrasted pasty white faces.

I find that no matter how all these people dress and try and stand out, if you talk to one of them alone, without all the others around to influence them, theres basically nothing special/different. They all think the same things about everyone else. Scenes these days are more about people trying ot fit in, rather than trying to stand out.

You probably notice that every concert you ever go to is a bit like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJrRLq2ILA4

nobody is really different anymore. and that is a sad sad thought Neutral

One thing I learnt when I was going thru my teenage years, was that it's what you DO that asserts who you are.
