computer-based recording. What are your thoughts?

Im doing some research on the New Zealand music ind.
and propose that the accessibility of computer based recording and post production technology WILL inevitably lead to a decline in recording standards throughout the NZ music industry

Songs we'll be hearing on the radio will not get worse. Radio has a standard that the songs they play have to meet. If it is a hit song but a shit recording, radio won't play it.

It would be sad if that were to happen. I guess that it is like when desktop publishing software became accessable to a lot of people. What we got (and still have to some extent) is a lot of poor quality newsletters, flyers etc. But now i think there is a general understanding that you need more than just the tools to do a good job, you need the skills as well.

I also think that in the music industry the consumer has the final say. If nobody buys the music becuase the production is crap then there will be no downward trend in quality.

I seriously disagree with the notion that the music will decline with ready access to computer based audio gear.

I believe the current standards out there are a hinderance to GREAT music because the studios want to control the music production.

The standards of today are actually crap and I think non-standard based music is potentially a great thing for the advancement of the music.

Let me tell you a thing or two about standards from a computing slant.

I'm a Systems Engineer and naturally I do the most amount of my work in a Windows world. Windows has become the default standard for desktop computers but Windows is major crap.

It's slow, buggy, full of security holes, and susceptable to viruses.

Windows does not promote innovation and in many respects stalls it making it difficult for fantastic gear to come about.

I'm a Mac fan and Apple is the complete opposite. While their Operating System (MacOS X) is based on standard UNIX (FreeBSD) it has been tailored into a truly great OS.

Apple also promote innovation and in many respects have caused standards to be made. USB for instance was going nowhere on the Windows platform until Apple ditched all legacy ports (parallel, serial, PS2 etc) and had nothing but USB and FireWire (which in itself is a standard developed by Apple). MPEG4 video and MP4 audio are standards that Apple played a major part in and will become the new format for audio and video on DVDs.

Applying that to the music world, the current set of music standards are promoting lack luster music with no innovation. It's just mass producing music of no decent quality.

With access to computer software then there is the possibility that music will become more innovative and less mainstream which I personally see as a good thing.

That's also not to say that there won't be any crap music but then look at the industry now and tell me what's different?

Back when I was a student in Otago the band I was in got a song played on some station down there (some commercial station, not Radio 1) that was recorded on one of those portable double tape deck things that had a microphone in it - just chucked it in the corner of the room while we were practicing and it came out really well.

Funny thing was that we spent a bit of money getting some tracks recorded properly and gave the radio a recording with the good stuff on one side and the tracks from our bedroom jam on the other, and it was a song from the bedroom jam they played.

It was for some rockquest thing though, so it probably doesnt count as getting proper radio play / promotion for a track.
