Sounds closure... Posted: Sat Nov 24, 2007 12:23 pm Is anybody really gonna notice? I can't remember the last time I made a point of even browsing at that place. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sat Nov 24, 2007 4:54 pm i dnt think anyone will mind too much. if you think about it, the warehosue duz sell it heaps cheaper and u can find msot mainstream stuff there, and if u really are looking for the less common stuff you can hit up real groovey. Im a manukau girly, and sounds has been DEAD ever since JB Hi Fi moved in the mall. Like seriously...its empty as. JB Hi Fi has heaps of decent bands and pretty damn good pricing, i got headbangers ball for 8 bux hahaha. and they order in too. Only good thing about Sounds that might be missed is the posters/t-shirts they sell. But there'z always trademe for that lol. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:08 pm Yeah the internet has made a big impact no doubt. Not just from piracy... but from legit CD sales. I've scored sweet shit from Amazon.com for as low as $2-$3 sometimes. With a lot of the less mainstream metal, instead of paying $40-$50 to have a store import it, I order from the distributor's website, usually costs between $15-$25 NZD. A good way to get stuff that's been released in Europe that you have to wait a year for an NZ/Aus release for. A cheaper way to do it without using p2p programs or copying that makes sure the artist gets commission. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 10:31 am Granted, they don't get much. But they deserve every cent they can get. One could also argue that bootleg sales HELP bands in some countries. Parts of Europe, South America, Asia, don't have legit CD industries. I remember Metallica getting HUGE in Europe just by tape trading... it meant they could go there and play big shows without even having to market at them. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 2:38 pm i only have 1 good memory of sounds and that was about 5 years ago a band called Box Car Racer released their first and only album and i had been searching EVERYWHERE for it and back in those days i didn't have a credit card and pay pal and so one day i was in sounds and i saw it, their last copy and it was $47 and i ran alllll the way through town to find my mum and ask her for the money to buy it. Ahhhh the days when i didn't have a job and money was handed to me |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 4:00 pm I'm always sad when a music store disappears. But I can totally see why it happened. I used to buy stuff there, but only on special. Their bargain bins lately have been crap compared to the Warehouse (I mean, I found the new Slayer for $5 at the wahoo!!). Trademe, Ebay etc, all make a dent. Real Groovy is so good for "niche" stuff and with online ordering now people are less inclined to go to a place like Sounds, CD Store, PlanetJacks etc. The internet, unfortunately, is a double edged sword. The music industry wasn't prepared for it. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sun Nov 25, 2007 5:04 pm ... and with the Internet, a lot of the independant labels have an easier job of marketing and selling their releases direct to consumers, bypassing the stores altogether. This is actually a good thing, as (I would hope) more money ends up in the artists pockets. |

Totally. I love getting a CD direct from the label, there's always nice little extras like a sticker, badge, catalogue or sampler CD in the package. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Sun Dec 9, 2007 10:15 pm tidsy - I know Raw Music in New Plymouth stocks plenty of local stuff, I've been in there a few times. Is it still running? There are still a few good "local" CD stores in most towns. They're the places people should be supporting, as they help get the real music out. |

RE: Sounds closure... Posted: Mon Dec 10, 2007 1:59 am "The company blamed a weak retail market and illegal downloading of music on the internet." (from the article) I personally think Sounds is targeted at a very teenage/mainstream market. I remember looking for the Muse cd for a mate's birthday a few months ago, couldn't find them, and they're not even THAT 'alternative'. They're having a 20% off everything sale at the christchurch stores now. Now I would be interested if 20% off $29.90 is even gonna be less than what I'd pay for music at the cd/dvd store or even borders. Also, blaming it on the download market is a pretty dumb call, I think that most people would be willing to pay money for music they think is worth it...just not from the most expensive place in town. I hope they get replaced by a decent music store that supports more local bands, quick. |
