Missing metal fan
Posted: Thu Dec 6, 2007 2:35 pm
Hi, anyone know a Christopher Gallie? 30 years old, 6 foot tall, big and surly and long dark brown hair. Huge metal fan. He is my brother and I have lost contact with him and have moved and married (he won't be able to find me). If you know of him text me on 027 276 5363 - cheers.

If there's one thing I will NEVER do, it's posting my cellphone number on a forum.

stink, i hope you find him, but i'm sure there are more proactive ways of finding someone than posting on bulletin boards.

Social networking sites make it really easy to find people (if they have online identities).

I'm stunned at the amount of people that put their contact numbers on their pages.

"BUT, BUT, BUT ONLY MY FRIENDS CAN VIEW IT".
...then they get hacked!
SNAP!

I don't see what the big deal is. I put my cell phone number on all my social networking pages including my personal website, and I have received calls and messages that I wouldn't have got otherwise which have worked in my favour. If someone decides to 'prank' me I can simply get telecom to block that number from my phone.

Cell phones are dirt cheap anyway, so taking the risk that I might have to buy a new cell with a new number for $50 far out weighs the oppourntunities that may come my way from providing people with my cell phone number.

My cell number is listed on another website, so if anyone wanted could look hard enough they could find it. I don't list it on here, because it is my work number, so I don't really want random people ringing me while I'm supposed to be working Happy

But like you said - if you're getting calls/txts you don't want, just get the number blocked or just ignore them.

My point is if somebody wants to, they can grab your personal details and commit fraud, internet identity theft etc.

A phone number, a birthday, where you work, your date of birth... just a few details about yourself is all somebody needs to make life very difficult for you.

Agreed. Social Networking websites do make it extremely easy for people to put those details in particular online. Personally, I never give my real DOB. Or my middle name.

I'm still amazed at the occassions in my job when I call a service/helpdesk on behalf of a customer and get them to do a whole lot of stuff without any questions asked.

Maybe I just sound like I know what I'm talking about (I DO!) and they just believe everything I tell them, no questions asked.

Yup, any number of those things can be presented over the phone to various companies or institutions for illicit use.

They're also potential hints to passwords, things like birthdays, names of pets, middle names etc. Stuff the average internet user might not think about.
