LA Mitchell first to front for Max Foundation
Posted: Mon Feb 25, 2008 7:30 pm
New Zealand's freshest singer-songwriter L.A. Mitchell has been chosen as the first musician to feature on the Max Foundation's initiative to promote homegrown female cultural and entrepreneurial enterprise.

The new initiative is part of the charitable Max Foundation campaign that aims to "support women (or groups of women) whose actions enhance the wellbeing and advancement of New Zealand women".

LA Mitchell says she is honoured to be the first musician featured in the campaign as it recognises her achievement in releasing her first album in August 2007, Debut, as a totally independent, self-managed female musician.

"It was a lot of hard work to pull it all together myself but the success of Debut has been amazing," said Mitchell. "It's so worthwhile to have achieved what we did and remain in control of the album.

"While there's a growing sector in New Zealand music that are self-managed and control their product, it's not something that a lot of kiwi women have embraced. I'm honoured that the Max Foundation have recognised this and I really hope that we can encourage other New Zealand female musicians to control their product," she said.

LA Mitchell's first album Debut was released in August 2007 to critical acclaim and strong 'indie' chart sales. Mitchell is set to record only the second ever Live at the Matterhorn album (Fat Freddy Drop was the first, in 2001) and is working on her second studio album to be released in late 2008.

Nick Bollinger, Radio New Zealand:
"There's no question that LA Mitchell's Debut introduces a very talented and creative musician. The grooves, the singing, the whole production are really impressive We'll be hearing a lot more of LA Mitchell."

Marty Blake, Waikato Times:
"Mitchell's album is beautifully presented and extremely well mastered I found myself blissfully daydreaming." ****1/2

Simon Sweetman, North & South:
"Here's a nice surprise Debut never tries to be anything more than it is: a nice batch of songs from a fresh young talent."

Marty Duda, Real Groove:
"It's difficult to listen to LA Mitchell and not compare her to Hollie Smith. Both are New Zealanders blessed with a beautiful voice and a love of R&B and jazz."
