What do you think???
Posted: Fri May 7, 2004 8:32 am
It has come to my attention that there are some companies that have been placing their music and other posters over the top of posters advertising gigs yet to happen.

Some areas in Auckland have had NZ music month posters put right over the top of up-and-coming gig posters, and in Wellington a company called Sticky Fingers who state they 'own' the places that the posters are put up so therefore have the right to cover up other posters, even if the event is yet to take place.

What do you all think about this? Do you think that NZ artists should have the right to advertise their gigs without their posters being covered up? Posters can cost a lot to produce and I can understand how annoying it must be when they have to go out and put a fresh lot of posters out every few days.

If NZ music month posters are covering up posters for NZ music artists, is this really showing their support for NZ music month?

Let us know your thoughts in this forum....

I think it's fucking stupid that we don't have a company who we can trust here in Auckland. I have used the major company here and they stuck our posters up then they stuck posters over it the next day. I also think, if these companies "own" these places, they should have signs up saying that they own it and that they have the right to place posters there like they do at the top of queens street.

i guess it's all part of the game. i personally hate the idea of covering up posters before they have expired, maybe some auto signs?? i dunno, one band had a great idea of tshirt advertising....but in the end it was taxing, so they started posting posters on the company cars of various peoples. I reckon the most effective way to promote a gig is have someone at the door of every other gig in or near the same genre for a month beforehand handing out flyers to punters leaving. I have found out this way about quite a few great gigs that I never saw any posters for. Targetted, direct advertising has got to be better than random postering. Also, flyers are way smaller and cheaper than posters.
