Musical culture of New Zealand
Posted: Mon Apr 14, 2008 9:36 am
I am doing some academic research on the musical culture in New Zealand. I was wandering if anyone would be able to answer some questions for me. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

1.Has the indigenous music of New Zealand affected its popular music?

2. If so how? Can you give examples?

3.Does music from other countries e.g. America become popular here?

4.If music from other countries becomes popular in NZ, to what extent does it compete with home grown artists for commercial success and a career?

5.Has popular music changed in New Zealand in the past five years? If so can you give examples?

6.Has music from the pacific islands ever influenced artists in New Zealand?

7.Has any music coming from the pacific islands ever made it to the top of the NZ charts?

8.What are the most popular live events in New Zealand?

Anything anyone wants to add any question or any input. please do.

Are these questions from a worksheet that you have to fill out yourself? They sound like it.

^ Yeah I agree - they sound more like something you would be asked to complete yourself when doing an assignment.

Answering these questions in-depth is going to take too long, so here are my shortened answers:

1. Yes

2. No

3. Yes

4. I'm yet to see a rich NZ musician...

5. Yes. It has to change, otherwise it wouldn't be popular any more.

6. Yes

1.Has the indigenous music of New Zealand affected its popular music?
Yes and no. As a whole I don't think it has , but there are individual artists who display a clear indigenous influence.

2. If so how? Can you give examples?
There's LOTS. More than I could mention. Dub, reggae, hip hop and other "roots" music has a distinct Maori flavour in my opinion.

3.Does music from other countries e.g. America become popular here?
Of course. Any "developed" country is massively influenced by American media. Heck, we've got Polynesian kids here copying the American "gangsta" culture, even adopting their pathetic "east v west" rivalry.

4.If music from other countries becomes popular in NZ, to what extent does it compete with home grown artists for commercial success and a career?
It doesn't really compete at all. Our charts have been full of non-local music for aeons.

5.Has popular music changed in New Zealand in the past five years? If so can you give examples?
I think its changed in that more bands are behind driving their own success, rather than hoping a label will sign them. And example is my old band, Tainted.... we did all our marketing, advertising, websites, promotions, touring etc. Kiwi bands have had to become more "media savvy" to get their name out there rather than just playing pubs and hoping something will happen. The music itself has changed in the sense that the "cool" genres that are dictated by the U.S charts definately prevail - right now you'll see lots of pop-punk/emo bands and hip-hop in our NZ charts, a direct reflection of international trends. Production is getting better too as a result (though whether or not it's REALLY better is purely subjective)

6.Has music from the pacific islands ever influenced artists in New Zealand?
Sure. An example would be King Kapisi. Samoan-tinged Kiwi hip hop.

7.Has any music coming from the pacific islands ever made it to the top of the NZ charts? What Kraven posted ;)

8.What are the most popular live events in New Zealand? What Kraven posted ;)
