Making A Genre That Fits Posted: Sun Sep 7, 2008 11:02 pm The most contentious issue with any music database is trying to arrange things into genres. On one hand you're trying to keep as many people happy as possible, while on the other you're trying to keep things simple. At the moment, there are about 2330 artists listing on muzic.net.nz, arranged into genres as follows: Alternative Rock 446 Blues/Jazz 87 Country/Folk 64 Electronica 215 Hip Hop/R&B 156 Maori/Pacifica 18 Metal 122 Misc 100 Pop 125 Pop Rock 164 Punk 233 Reggae/Dub 56 Rock 369 Vocal/Acoustic 93 (Those people who are observant enough will notice that the numbers don't quite add up to 2330 - that's because not all of the artists have been stuck into genres) Now, my ultimate goal is to have the artist database arranged so that if someone searches a band or musician they like, it will also make suggestion on others that may also interest them. Possible methods of achieving this include taking user feedback to create the "links" or by arranging artists into a broader range of genres and sub-genres to make the selection based on that. Or a combination of the two. If we do go to a broader sub-genre setup, we're obviously going to have to implement some sort of user polling system to help put artists into various genres. I would also allow artists to exist in more than one genre. What do you guys think - is it important to you to seperate your Grindcore from your Hardcore, your Gangsta from your Freestyle, your Trip Hop from your Acid Jazz... |

RE: Making A Genre That Fits Posted: Sun Sep 7, 2008 11:05 pm There's a pretty good genre list here that I'm considering using as a starting point. |
