How to get gigs?

Hi there,

I'm new to the scene, and infact I am new(ish) to NZ. I was wondering if anyone had any tips and info on the best way to get gigs? I have got a band together and we should hopefully be ready to start gigging in a few months.

Being new to this stuff I don't really have any contacts or much clues on how to make it happen... help would be appreciated. We are based in the Auckland region, but I guess this stuff applies for most cities/areas.

Have a look around the internet - there's plenty of music sites and forums dedicated to specific areas.

For example, there's Dunedinmusic.com, Chart (ChCh Music Trust) etc etc.

There's often contacts or forums you can find contacts in.

Also, just get your name out there, go to gigs, talk to people, get "down" with the right folk. Get numbers of venue owners and talk turkey with them.

Having a good demo is a big help too.

It was easy for us when I was in Tainted, because we'd already been gigging for years in other bands, the contacts were already there.

With my bands we have just organised shows our selves and got some other bands to play, maybe get a more popular band to headline. You make friends with other bands by doing that then they'll hook you up with shows and so on.
