NZ On Air Funding?
Posted: Fri Jun 25, 2004 9:01 am
I was trying to get my friend funding for a single from NZ On Air who kindly grant 40 artists $5,000 per year to record their single in a studio. The artists below were the lucky recipients on this latest round of grants -

* Teenage Frustration by Devil Gate Drive (Groovy Times)

* Last American Outlaws by Rod Gardner (Broken Records)

* Ordinary Girl by Nick Hohepa (Downbeat Records)

* Anywhere But Here by Nikita (Independent)

* Strung by Sooz Fougere (Independent)

* They Don't Know by Tyree (Independent)

* True Love by The Artistry (Funktion Music)

* So Lonely by The Bleeders (1157 Records)

* What You Heard by The Checks (Independent)

There are also 120 video grants given per year and the latest round saw 24 artists get the $5,000 video grant -

* Antenna Recordings/Crumb/Got It All

* Arch Hill Recordings/Fang/Something Good

* BMG New Zealand/Evolver/Stars

* BMG New Zealand/Gramsci/Recovery

* BMG New Zealand/Misfits Of Science/Scrubbin'

* Capital Recordings/Definite & Bling/Jump Up!

* Casa Del Disco Recordings/Sommerset/Say What You Want

* Cement Records/goodshirt/My Racing Head

* Dawn Raid Entertainment/Adeaze/Memory Lane

* EMI Music/Greg Johnson/Kiss Me

* Festival Mushroom Records/Dimmer/Case

* Funktion Music/Sara-Jane Auva'a/You Are

* Liberation Music/betchadupa/Window

* Lil Chief Records/The Brunettes/Loopy Loopy Love

* Lupin Music/Lucid 3/Pitch Jumping

* Muse Entertainment/Damien Binder/Anytime

* Ning Nong Records/Dead End Beat/Forget Me

* Shock Records/The Have/Monday Through Friday

* Sony Music/Che Fu/2D

* Tourist/Tourist/Do You Feel The Cold?

* Wildside Records/Graham Brazier/In Your Company

* Wildside Records/Stylus/Incredible

My only question is should some of the groups above who are quite established musicians now be eligible for the grants? I know it's a tough industry to survive in in NZ, but I'm not sure where I stand on the issue? What do you guys think?

I believe it all comes down to risk and how big a spin you put on why you need the funding. It's all about grabbing their attention.

Established acts get in because they are known, and are far less likely to offer unpleasant "surprises". Start doing that, and people start asking questions like "Did we really fund that?". Or worse still, "Yay we got $5k, lets have a big piss up and think about making a video".

Still no funding for music websites either... Crying
