Aspiring artist seeks advice Posted: Sat Mar 21, 2009 12:20 pm Hi, I'm new to the site so I hope I am posting in the right area... Basically, I'm an aspiring Artist/Producer working outta the bedroom at the moment as I'm sure many others are although I do have experience working in studios. I have worked on my own projects and with many other people in collaborations as well as a small piece in a popular NZ TV series soundtrack. I feel I have now come to a point where I am ready to perform and diversify. I have been working on my skills for going on 8 years now, and have a relatively firm understanding of the composition, production and recording processes, though have limited equipment with which to flex my "muscles". In a nutshell I'm looking for advice on where to go from here and what others have done to achieve some form of success in being signed, or coordinating with others in order to get their works out and heard. I have close friends who are in the music business though it's become apparent that the inner workings of their particular genre's and businesses are quite different to those that I am targeting. I have done many works (numbering close to 150 now at a guess) both finished and unfinished, though I am realising that if I am to be taken seriously, I need to be pointed in the right direction. My work is not quite radio quality. I have worked with many people in the past on an amateur level, though now I want to take it to the next level, be it as a producer or a hiphop performer (or both - think NZ's version of Kanye West hehe). I have been throwing up the idea of sending Demo's out, though after browsing the net for advice and information (generally from off-shore sources) I am worried that doing so could close doors for me as - like I mentioned before - I'm not sure I am to the quality that would do my work justice. I need to learn and diversify in a commercial environment. Any suggestions on what to do, where to go, or who to speak to would be greatly appreciated! Just for those interested I am posting one link to a piece I composed/produced/performed.. I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by doing so! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9hMAHbdfKo Thanks in advance! |

RE: Aspiring artist seeks advice Posted: Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:05 am Sitting back and posting out demo's is one thing... But it's another to get out there and get into the scene and talking to people. Hookups come from surprising places, so it's a good thing to have a physical presence in "the scene" you're aiming to make it in. |
