Hi Everybody!

My name is Tonya. I am currently in the process of completing my Master of Arts thesis at Victoria University of Wellington. My research project is a study of the relationship between alt. country and the concept of authenticity. As part of this study, I want to interview fans of the genre from New Zealand to attempt to determine the appeal of the alt. country for the international audience and to begin to make comparisons with other research on this topic.

I'm interesting in recruiting true fans of the genre, people who love talking about music and have a real passion for alt.country (or new country, twangcore, alternative country, americana... whatever you want to call it!). The questions will address your musical listening habits, focussing on which alt. country artists you listen to and why, as well as your general perceptions of the genre, including lyrical motifs and opinions of seminal alt. country musicians. Your responses will be adding to a new and exciting field of research, as scholars and music journalists who have critically addressed the topic to date have neglected to discuss the wide and varied audience of alt.country music. They instead tend to concentrate on the reception in an American context. But as we know, this is only part of the story! There is wide base of committed and enthusiastic all over the world. And I want to talk to you!

I would be interested in conducting interviews with you via email, where you can determine the depth in which you answer the questions posed. You would have approximately six months to prepare your response. Participation in this research would be entirely voluntary and done for the love of the music.
