big moments in music
Posted: Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:32 pm
When asked to sum up the last 1000 years in music in one sentence Eddie Van Halen once answered

"Well there was church music then along came Bach and nothing has been new since" (possibly not actual quote but at least a paraphrase of EVH)

I would have probably gone with something like.

Guido of Arrezzo invents written music, Bach tempers tunings, Christofori invents the piano, mozart reinvents music, recorded sound makes musicians gods, guitar reinvents the palette of modern music and finally the net brings us all back down to earth.

The challenge: Sum up the highlights of music, from your perspective, in one sentence.

ROCK!! BIG MOMENTS IN MUSIC!!

Playa Please! You been trippin aiight?

Rock came in the 19'something and Jazz and all those cool songs has been in waaaay longer than that Bro!!.

I would have to say...rock only came in the 21st century....waaay back then I dont think you would have called them rock bands...problee Nut Cases with Guitars woulda suited them.

Now we have all kinds of rock bands and I'll rather prefere 2 listen HIP-HOP/RAP/POP/R&B!!!

Its waay more x-citing and interesting and shizzle.
I mean i aint h8n the rock band fans or the bands....Im a rock fan myself.

But the big moment in music 4 me would have to be....Nat King Cole , Aretha Franklin , Frank Senatra , Billie Holidae , Peggy Lee and many other Jazz singers.

Happy PEACE OUT!! Happy D-Town!!!

A lot of the music, and similar artists owe a lot to the production values and rulebook created by a man called Mitch Miller. Miller's blueprints helped lead to the creation of rock and roll and, soon after rock music. It all relates and has its importance.

By the way first rock and roll single "rocket 88" by Ike Turner (circa 1949)
First 'Rock' single usually cited is Cream's 'Sunshine of your love' (circa 1965)

And I think the Beatles have to be on any list of music greats. When you look at what they created from 'Revolver' onwards it was of an ingenuity rarely matched. Ok so some of the recordings suffer from looking like a slow moving, rusty old model T in a fast, shiny plastic world but looking at the songs themselves you can really appreciate just how bloody clever Mcartney, Lennon and even Harrison (at times) could be.

I would say Metallica would make my list of the century

I dont know whether i could sum up highlights of music in one sentence...but some "big" moments in music:

When Pete Townshend first smashed up his guitar onstage (how many guitarists have followed in his footsteps??)
Woodstock 69 ( i wasnt alive or anything, but hell, looked pretty awesome)
i really really hate to say this, but a big moment in music was michael jackson's "thriller" album.......enough said.
Nirvana - after teen spirit they started topping charts everywhere, introducing a new fashion, a new idea etc for teens...grunge....
Metallica
Alice Cooper - Started copycats like Marilyn Manson
David Bowie - Introduced Glam Rock????
These arent the biggest moments in music, but off the top of my head i spose they are pretty important... Confused

/When Pete Townshend first smashed up his guitar onstage (how many guitarists have followed in his footsteps??)

Agreed.

/Woodstock 69

Also in agreement but would also add Altemont, 1970 to that list as it has been described as the precise moment flower power died.

michael jackson's "thriller" album.

Forced radio stations and MTV to play black artists. Total agreement

Nirvana - after teen spirit they started topping charts everywhere, introducing a new fashion, a new idea etc for teens...grunge....

That's the one I hate to admit. It gave rock music a good kick up the arse but the baby (good technique) got thrown out with the bathwater.

Metallica

No more, or less important than Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, U2 or Led Zeppelin. They have left an indelible imprint on music and really defined what a genre was about.

Alice Cooper - Started copycats like Marilyn Manson

Hmmm. There were shock rockers before Alice. As a voice of a seemingly more 'suburban neurotic' youth that grew out of the post war society, looking to pop culture for escapism, He's part of the Marylin thing as well as the Female/ Male moniker.

David Bowie - Introduced Glam Rock????

Guess so. Add to the list Slade, the sweet, T-Rex, Queen (to a degree), Kiss and Gary glitter. I think the New York Dolls may have been around before Bowie went glam.

Cool list Page_isMyGod! I'd also add

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody video 1975.
The Beatles Sgt Pepper's lonely hearts club band (68?)
The Beach Boys 'Pet sounds'
The Sex pistols 'Never mind the bollocks'
Live aid (1985)
MTV (ca 1985?)- First vid- Video killed the radio star' -almost prophetic????
Radio Caroline launches in UK (NZ copies with Hauraki)
Saturday night Fever (1976)
John Lennon's 'Mind Games'
Metallica-The Black Album
Van Halen -Van Halen.

Older events/ people...

Mitch Miller invents many of the common conventions of recording. 1940s- 50s
Rock around the clock (Bill haley and the comets)
ELVIS
Phil Spector and his wall of sound approach to producing
The Beatles
Jimi Hendrix- takes a bunch of guitar licks already in existance and fuses them into a cohesive style. Reinvents guitar
Eddie Van Halen - takes a bunch of guitar licks already in existance and fuses them into a cohesive style. re-reinvents guitar.
I'm gonna give up at this point or I'll be here for some time.

chuck berry-johnny be goode

man that song still kicks ass!!!

The Kinks-You really Got Me
The worlds first Rock song (elvis kickstarted rock'n'roll years earlier and of course you could look back to John Lee Hooker and the Kingsmen and of course Chuck berry, but this was the first proper ROCK record in many peoples opinion)

80s hair metal!!!!

The beatles discovering distortion and feedback

Eric Claptons Wah Pedal-used before hendrix

Elvis Presley-Thats all right mama (arguably) the first guitar solo

I could go on and claim that its all one scentence but I'd only repeat other people and it would probably take me a week to write everything I want to
