I may be moving to New Zeland due to a job offer. I have haeard that NZ may be racist so I may not take the offer. Is this true do you think New Zealand will be an inhospitable place for a professional that is a black american. My wife is from Sweden and we have an interracial family so I would not take the offer if this is racist place. Let me know what you think?

I have 2 black American mates whom live in NZ and they have not experienced racism here, and they have been living here for 5 months now and they love the place. Of course there are INDIVIDUALS out there whom ARE racist but doesnt that exist in every country? you cant control every individual. I personally think New Zealand has less racism than all the other countries put together! No one can say NZ is racist un-less the peeps who said that have met every individual that lives in New Zealand, which I doubt they have. You have a interracial family and we have a multi-cultural Country (Maori and European, Asian, Pacific Islanders etc). Dont listen to what other people say about our Country, you come and you be the judge. Maybe they are saying that because they are jelous of you and are trying to put you off?? lol... Accept the job and come!!!!... lol... I reckon you guys will love it here, and YES New Zealand IS truely beutiful!!! dont not come to New Zealand and kill this opportunity because of what others have told you...you would regret it.

Well, I've never been to any other country so I cant compare But I'm a chinese guy thats been living here my entire life, and I've never experienced racism, or for my race at least.
But to tell you the truth, I've barely met any black americans, so i don't if they've been through racism here. Although I'm guessing that they're finding it pretty friendly country with no prejudice or discrimitive people.

Except maybe that National dude Don Brash..

i live in christchurch and sadly racism could be a bit of an issue at times, but its mostly all good

i hope NZ isnt racist, racism is so gay. i reckon people have way more things to worry about

NZ isn't racist in the slightest. There are some who have concerns about the country being "swamped" by immigrants with different languages and cultures who may not integrate.
"not integrating" means that they will settle in a few areas where they can all be together. I believe this has happened in the UK, where entire (large) suburbs look like a foreign country.
I don't believe you will experience the slightest of problems. Come on over.
P.S. Despite having taken the time to respond to your enquiry, I am a little dubious as to its veracity.....Black American with Swedish wife? Are you planning a golfing career in NZ ....Tiger?

It's because "all sorts of people are everywhere" that racism is developing.
One example: We've currently got the courts tied up (on taxpayer money) over two immigrants who insist on attending court dressed like Darth Vadar. It's exactly this sort of thing that gets up people's noses and sows the seeds of racism.

NZ racist? Well although prejudices may be prevalent around the world...being of multi-cultural ethnicity I would say that my experience in NZ was great! I think that you may need to sit down and check yourself a little to make sure that you do not base your decision solely on others experiences, because your experiences alone will be unique...and the outcome is up to you. Taking risks is what life is about, and if you never step beyond the threshold you'll always wonder what if?...Go to NZ take the job and see where it leads you. Ok I'm done now...lol...

Racism is everywhere in the wolrd, I know cos I've been most places. But you learn how to avoid it, and where it is most common. Like trouble, you can always go looking for it, but it's not right there under your nose all the time. NZ is a great place to live. Racism in most cases is based on stereotypes, and negative ones at that.
If you carry yourself well, and treat others with respect and don't provide people with an excuse to bitch about you, you don't give them the opportunity to blame your behaviour on your racial background, whatever it may be.
But that is just my humble opinion, I could be wrong?

man youd be crazy NOT to come. New Zealand is a melting pot of culture. Everyone i know that has emmigrated to NZ, especially from more obscure lands, loves NZ and its people. I know quite a few Africans and without being racist theyre black as the night, and i dont no anyone who has ever openly been racist towards them.

from what ive found, most people who do show signs or "racism" get annoyed at the lack of effort by *newbies* to integrate.

Has anyone paused for a moment to consider that the person who instgated this enquiry has not yet returned to forum to add comment to our comments?
Is it not possible that they were simply "setting the cat among the pigeons"?
After all, as Bats pointed out, this was posted by a "black American with a Swedish wife". I cannot dispute the fact that some black Americans may have Swedish wives. It seems coincidental that black American, Tiger Woods, recently married a Swede.
