RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Wed Apr 6, 2005 2:50 pm There ain't nothing wrong with Scribe or hip hop in general. The amount of people in these forums that hate on NZ's hip hop industry is pathetic... it's where, and what, it is because it's got wide market appeal and is catchy – and there are all these wanna be 12 – 2o something boys out there that like the whole gangsta style. Just because it hasn’t got screechy guitar, screaming vocals and so on, doesn’t mean it’s crap. How you can say Salmanella Dub is crap is beyond me too. The band has continued to produce good song after good song, lovely dub, good D’n’B, again catchy, melodic and their lead singer has an amazing voice. Every genre has its place and it just strikes me that this forum, and this is a gross generalization but, I feel, a warranted one, seems to be largely narrow minded when it comes to appreciating other genres of music, particularly those they believe are "lesser" because someone's not playing a guitar. Broaden your minds |

RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Sat Apr 16, 2005 3:05 pm Blend, I totally hear what you're saying aye, its like theres two sides, those for hip hop, rap and r&b, and those for metal, rock and punk. Its sad, since theres so many other genres aswell. Also the fact that people think they're better because of what they listen to. Anyway, some of my favourite NZ artists are; Evermore, Salmonella Dub, Pluto, The Datsuns, P. Money and Fur Patrol. |

RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Mon Apr 18, 2005 9:54 am Aesop Rock. though not a NZ artist.... Maybe it's not meaningful to you because you don't relate to that lifestyle, which is very understandable. I don't really relate either, and I don't listen to much hip hop, it's not my thing... but you can find good and meaningful music in ANY genre if you're willing to wade through the garbage for a while. |

RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:31 pm not necessarily, some music *coughs*hip hop*coughs* doesnt really have any meaning at all. its just to dance to or they just listen to the music not to the lyrics. why bother writing good lyrics if people dont even listen to them? |

RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Mon Apr 18, 2005 8:32 pm True, it does make for fun reading. Carry on! And that's what I was trying to say about the hip hop, the commercial stuff can be god awful, but you can find some good stuff that has positive lyrics. Believe it or not there ARE some rappers who can rhyme more words than TRIGGA and NIGGA. |

RE: Who is NZ hottest Artist? Posted: Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:42 am Try listening to Kayne West for meaningful hip hop... there are a few "I got where I am cause I strived" sorta songs, but he actually does a good job of explaining hip hops materialistic mentality and why he feels he's got to don labels and bling watches to go down to the dairy. And as for meaningful hip hop... to all these ex-gangstas, rapping about their cursed life and how they've now made it big, well it is meaningful to them. Shit I'd be talking all about my bizness if I was once in the ghetto and was now driving a flash bentley and drinking top shelf liquor. Wouldn't you? Why doesn't turn the target on people like Sum 41, Yellowcard and all those punk by numbers bands... what do they sing about again? |
