here comes the big one

Ok, as we all know New Zealand music has pretty much grown hugely over the last 10 years. I mean, it used to be just Shihad, Stellar and...yea thats all I remember Confused . But NOW fuck theres countless numbers of bands, singers, rappers, composers in the NZ music scene its ludicrous.

But I'll get to the point. After Big Day Out last night, a Channel Z promoter handed me a pamphlet. It was quite a small size, about 2x3 inches, black with white writing. But thats irrelevant. What it actually said was that on Waitangi day 2005, Channel Z the all time supporter for NZ music is going 100% NZ music.

Weird, huh? When I first heard it, I was like "What the hell?! How are they gonna do that? Theres some NZ artists but not enough for a full radio station? Shit, half of the broadcasting will be advertisements?!" but then I realised, no. There's plenty of NZ artists. And it's growing. Very very quickly.

Although I did think "Whats gonna happen to Modest Mouse?Interpol? The Von Bondies?" Some of my most favourite artists. Is there somewhere else can find these eccentric artists eg. The Rock? I have been loyal to channel Z for many years now. But there decision has left me wondering whether to switch to 91 ZM Confused .

I don't mind NZ music, but I still want to hear the international artists.
Ohwell, I guess in the words of Bic Runga "Never be afraid of change".

I gave up on radio a long time ago. I suggest you do the same.

I think the main question is: What is NZ music?

There's nothing new under the sun now. Every "new" song I hear reminds me strongly of one I've heard in the past.

Is NZ music rap? (eg. same tune, same rhythm ...just a few new "words")
Is NZ music reggae?
Is NZ music rhytm 'n' blues?
Jazz? rock 'n' roll?
Is NZ music a cover version of a UK or US song?

etc etc.

I think the proper term is "NZ Bands"

don't switch to 91zm, there playlisting is crap (sorry 91zm if you are reading this) - why not give the new station a listen and see what the material is like, or at least give the rock a chance, listen to a station which isnt a sheep - and actually supports NZ music.
