Folk Music?
Posted: Mon Feb 28, 2005 3:00 pm
I just moved to Wellington from Santa Cruz, California. I've been playing mostly folk music lately, but have also been a drummer in a punk rock band in the past. I brought along my lo-fi home recording studio and am looking to meet new musicians and possibly record.

I've noticed lots of punk rock bands and such, but is there a folk scene here in NZ?

There's all types of folk. Not sure which "branch" you specifically mean.
In NZ it's mainly "roots folk". Songs (many with heavy Irish-sounding bent) about the settler days ...gold mining, floods, general hardship and suchlike.
An example is: Robert Scott - Song's of Otago's Past

My influences are many.... here are some of em.

Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Wll Oldham, Sufjan Stevens, Davendra Banhart, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, the Microphones, Little Wings, etc. etc. I dig those hardship songs.

Some more hard rocking influences would be: Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Bright Black Sky, the Black Keys, White Stripes

I've seen Dave Matthews a couple times, he puts on a real good live show. Can't say I like much of his new stuff though...

I've got one song of mine posted at www.myspace.com/lincolncolm

I'm gonna record another two songs in the next couple of days. I'd like to start a project with some NZ musicos. Thanks for responding.

Depends on your definition of Folk. As another person has said the "Folk" scene is NZ is largly based on traditional Irish/English music and then Bluegrass/Country. Speaking as someone that's been around the NZ folk scene for 20 years I can't really think of any groups in NZ that would fit your definition of folk. Hey, I guess you've discovered an untapped niche market! If you're every thinking of living in Auckland then drop me a line, I'm 28 and I play guitar/bass/mandolin/5-string banjo and would love to get involved in a project like this.

I play those same instruments and i just bought a fiddle to learn on (might want to give me a few years before i can scratch out a decent tune on it). Unfortunately I'll be stuck in Wellington for at least 3-4 years as my wife is attending VUW.

I guess my definition of folk, coming from America, would be the likes of Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, and early Bob Dylan.

There is a whole new folk/alt. country/experimental scene coming up with some really good artists like Iron & Wine (free mp3 downloads at ironandwine.com), Sufjan Stevens, the Microphones, and Davendra Banhart to name a few. You should check them out if you get the chance.
