History of Hardcore pt1 Posted: Thu Apr 7, 2005 10:50 am I thought that with the fact that I'm not working at the mo' and how I like to talk about music, I thought I would enlighten our younger posters etc about Punk / Hardcore (stuff I was religious about when I was 15) I'm just gonna run through some bands and stuff, recommend albums to buy, etc...............and to our more knowledgble guys n gals, if you could humour us! Bad Brains- 'Rock for light' Virtually everyone agrees that this group--made up of four Washington, D.C.-bred African American jazzbos--single-handedly invented hardcore. They radically quickened punk's tempos, added virtuoso instrumentation, and topped it all off with the mystic squeals of shaman-like frontman Paul "H.R." Hudson. This disc, produced (oddly enough) by ex-Cars leader Ric Ocasek, gives voice to the band's scathing sociopolitical judgment (see "Big Takeover") as well as its ability to simply put the hammer down and rock ("At the Movies"). It also allows the rhythm section of Darryl Jenifer and Earl Hudson to flex their muscle on a smattering of dub reggae interludes that help lull the unsuspecting into the right frame of mind for the next HC sucker punch. |

RE: History of Hardcore pt1 Posted: Thu Apr 7, 2005 12:52 pm Good to hear from you, Well have been busy, drumming in a band for a few months, we were going to record and we progressed to practising at the killing rooms (we were using a guys house before that!) I found that the bass player wasn't gonna turn up to the next practice coz I was gonna be there..........apparently he had some 'issues' with my drumming (too loud!?) and thought the mature thing to do was just not turn up, and not discuss the situation- let me say this guy is in his 40's!! Anyway, tried to comminicate with him, but because he's such a gutless wonder this hasn't occured!! Band no2 - With me singing, but have been playing drums just to 'fill in' we have a couple of drummers lined up, just waiting to hook up with them, this band is more organic and I feel will be more successful. I don't know whether it's a kiwi trait, but alot of bands just seem to go around in musical circles - it's not that difficult in this country, if you have one iota of talent you will go far, some 'musicians' I think are scared of success. On a different note, I see your playing Real Groovy, Nice! Have you got any other shows / recording etc in the pipeline..? Cheers for now Stu |

RE: History of Hardcore pt1 Posted: Thu Apr 7, 2005 2:40 pm Yip. We're trying to do at least 2 a month, this month as well as Real Groovy we've also got one earlier that day in the Akld Uni Quad. In May I think we're playing at the Rising Sun and the Dogs Bollix. Heard you were also playing with Dave Sharp for a while, or is that still on? RE: History of Hardcore pt1 Posted: Thu Apr 7, 2005 3:41 pm Nah, We had a different outlook on what style of music we wanted to play, no bad vibes though, he's found some other guys to jam with, so it's left us trying to find a drummer (i'm singing) we might get another guitarist. We're thinkin of trying out a practice place in Featherstone..? Not sure where it is, Anyone know anything about this place? Is there anyone else out there? It seems that there are too many negative folks on here, if you were in London, it would be 1000 times worse!! Let's be a bit more positive what we have in this country! C'mon! |

RE: History of Hardcore pt1 Posted: Fri Apr 8, 2005 9:33 am You mean Featherstone Studio's/Area 51/Intergalactic Records. It's in west auckland, New Lynn I think. It's been a while since I've been there. It's a good practice room and Andrew Featherstone has some good contacts. Nice studio too, I've known their engineer Mark Pavletich (or Mr. P as I used to call him) for a while now. Very clever guy!!! |
