RECORD YOUR DEMOS FOR BUGGER ALL!!!
Posted: Thu Mar 20, 2003 4:32 pm
Hey kids,

Aside from playing with goats I also do a mean demo. I can give you the opportunity to do a really good digital quality demo for bugger all. I've been an audio engineer on and off for the last 8 years so I know what I'm doing. I charge around $15-$20 an hour but that's definitly negotiable, I do all the travelling ie- I'll come to your place and setup and you'll get your demo on CDR. INTERESTED?! Email [email protected] or (021) 426 949.

I DO NOT WANT TO RECORD YOUR DEMO'S AT THE MOMENT:

I am bogged down with other commitments at the moment and do not have time to indulge in my hobby. Thanks to all of the people that called but could you please stop calling me now!

cheers

Goatboy here,

Keep on eye on this post. I'm currently in negotiations with a few people and there is a good possibility that a new studio/practice space will be opening in Auckland within the next 18 months. I will do my best to keep the rates good. If you have any suggestions as to what you'd like to see then feel free to email me: [email protected]

Gosh.

I can remember putting together some very listenable acoustic demos back in the early eighties on my Nakamichi cassette deck. It had three microphone inputs so it was possible, with a little practice, to get a good stereo image across a piano or guitar or two and a couple of vocalists. Easy and cheap, but no overdubs and no editing. Kept us honest, I guess.

Yeh, I've done similar things but unless lo-fi is your gimic people want something a bit better than that these days. The way things are going these days unfortunately means that "production" can mean more than "music". My first outing in the world of recording was 2 ghetto blasters. I'd record a track on one tape deck, then put another tape in the other one and "overdub" the 2nd track while playing the 1st. A long and involved process but heaps of fun when you're 10.

Yep, that's about where I got into it too, but in the pre-cassette days of open reel.

The Nakamichi was great for a lot of things. I bootlegged a number of seventies/eighties concerts with it in a shoulder bag under a fur coat. It was a bulky beast - eight size D batteries, no Auto Level Control, but thankfully the VU meter lights could be turned off. Of all the concerts I think I only still have the Talking Heads tape.

OK. Break's over.

I'm in the middle of mixing my next album, and I realised over dinner that there are a couple of bars in the middle of this afternoon's effort that really don't fit. Sigh.

I am one step closer to my goal. Due to refinancing (a new job) I am looking at upgrading my equipment sometime soon and perhaps reconvening the mobile setup. Ideally I would like a permanent base but due to financial restraints (an impending mortgage) that plan may not come into fruition within the 18 month goal that I initially intended. However I promise people in Auckland the following:

a) I will make good quality demo recordings available to everyone at a good price
b) I will not undercut and use crappy equipment to achieve this
c) I will always stick to my ethic that until the recording is finished that no money will pass hands
d) I will record you, no questions asked, any style of music, except for that one guy that wanted me to go to White Island and record the craters erupting (yes, these people are out there)
