Footage of NZ Musicians wanted! Posted: Thu May 26, 2005 8:13 pm The makers of a second series of the television documentary series 'Give It A Whirl' are looking for film and videotape of local musicians from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The critically acclaimed first series explored the history of New Zealand rock ’n’ roll from its birth in the mid-fifties through to the present day. It is currently being replayed on TV One at 11.00pm on Wednesdays. “A shortage of archive footage is a major obstacle in making a series like this,” says producer Michael Higgins. “Many classic TV performances have been lost over the years. Programmes from the sixties and seventies were mainly shot on film and ended up in landfills because popular music wasn't appreciated as being culturally significant at the time and people envisaged no future use. Videotape was used increasingly during the seventies but it was incredibly expensive for many years. It just wasn't economically feasible to use it once and archive it.” ‘C’mon’, New Zealand’s sixties version of ‘Top of the Pops’, ran from 1967 until 1969 but only two episodes have been kept. Higgins would like to hope that further episodes of it and other TV shows might still be uncovered. He admits that this is a long shot but the BBC has had some success with similar appeals - including episodes of Dr Who that turned up in New Zealand. The Give It A Whirl team is also looking for privately shot film of local musicians from the fifties, sixties and seventies. A similar appeal made in conjunction with the first series yielded the only known footage of Johnny Devlin performing in New Zealand. Give It A Whirl can be contacted through TVNZ on (09) 916-7000 or at [email protected] For further information contact Michael Higgins – ph (09) 916-6911 |
