Flying Nun Series On National Radio Posted: Mon Dec 9, 2002 4:09 pm Thanks to Median Strip for this story: Tuesday, December 17, National Radio starts a five-programme series telling the story of one of New Zealand's musical institutions - Flying Nun Records. Presented by former Radio With Pictures host Karyn Hay, the series has been drawn from over 100 hours of new and archival interviews, a labour of love for researcher / producer Liisa McMillan. In 1981 Christchurch record shop manager and music fan Roger Shepherd decided someone should be recording the bands he loved to watch each weekend. Armed with this idea and a mere $50, Flying Nun Records was born. Shepherd and Flying Nun went on to document one of the most diverse and interesting bodies of music in New Zealand - and, some would argue, the world. The series documents the label's evolution from an independent co-operative of musicians and supporters working for free to get the music out there. It charts diverging ambitions as bands find audiences overseas, and examines the way the company and artists deal with the problems of creating commercially viable music in New Zealand and beyond. "It's one of the great rock 'n' roll stories, full of big personalities, high ideals, opportunities both seized and lost, and a soundtrack to die for because, in the end, (as in the beginning) Flying Nun is all about the music," says McMillan. Programme Details: 8pm, Tuesdays, on National Radio. December 17: Anything Could Happen December 24: Getting Older January 7: In Love With These Times? January 14: The Sound Is Out There January 21: Under The Influence Shade muzic.net.nz |
