Popular Dance Culture Exhibition Now On Posted: Sun Dec 22, 2002 10:54 am Thanks to The Edge for this info: An exhibition of photographic works that describes and documents the dance culture phenomenon which has captured the imagination of the main stream pop culture in New Zealand is now on show. The dance culture has long been viewed as little more than reckless hedonism, feckless consumerism, lacking in culture aesthetic worth. However, the history of the dance culture now dates back more than two decades. It has become a significant part of the Western staple diet of its youth leisure culture throughout the world. It is a form of globalisation on the dance floor. The 2001-2002 period was the zenth of the popular dance culture scene in Auckland. Gigs held in 2001 like Slinky, Two Tribes, Gods Kitchen and Gatecrasher, not to mention super star international DJ's, sold out with crowd numbers swelling to 4000-5000. Lines to get inside the venues typically stretched around the block with waiting times for the often scantly dressed ravers were well over half an hour. In the past year there has been significant shifts within Auckland dance culture. With the advent of the lowered drinking age and a new generation of ravers coming through, the scene has been evolving at a very fast pace. Market driven forces are causing the raver age demographic to lower and the Auckland dance culture scene now more closely resemles the British Rave model. Raves are now becoming a more accepted place in contemporary society where the youth will continue to party all night and indluge in recreational drugs, en mass. It is one of the newest forms of escapism, a momentary oasis from the hum drum, weekly working cycle of the modern world Venue: Aotea Gallery, Aotea Centre, Auckland Until Tuesday 31 December 2002.
