“Sounds Like a Blur” to me
Posted: Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:21 pm
New Zealand music fans have an exclusive chance to own one-of-a-kind photos of their favourite bands in action at an exciting new photography exhibition.

“Sounds Like a Blur” will run during New Zealand Music Month, May 2007. The brainchild of noted music photographer Sean Aickin and supported by Little Brother, Sounds Like a Blur will take the best of the many New Zealand bands he’s snapped over the past four years and team them with a charity of their choice.

Music fans will be able to check out the band photos and purchase their favourites at the exhibition venues, online or at Real Groovy and Little Brother Stores in Auckland and Wellington. All the proceeds go straight to the band’s chosen charity.

“The aim of the exhibition is to showcase the amazing talent we have in the New Zealand music industry. For music fans, nothing beats a live gig, so the photos I’ve selected for Sounds Like a Blur are designed to bring the feeling and intensity of a live show straight back home with you,” Sean says.

“Shooting live bands is unlike anything else. I can’t control my environment, the crowd won’t listen to me, the band can’t hear me and the lighting is unpredictable. The only thing I can control is my camera and the film I use. I still shoot on film as it allows me the freedom to photograph a multitude of situations and capture all the craziness and emotion of a live gig.”

Among the top acts caught by Sean are Shihad, The Datsuns, Autozamm, Batrider, Cassette, Charlie ASH, Deja Voodoo, Die!Die!Die!, Dimmer, HDU, Paselode, Pluto, So So Modern, Steriogram, Superette, The Accelerants, The Bleeders, The D4, The Mint Chicks, The Shaky Hands and Thought Creature.

“We’ve kept prices realistic, and people can choose to have their prints in either A3 or A4. There will also be a special online auction for the exhibition photos, which are all A1 sized, which will run on TradeMe from Tuesday 5 June. Those big prints will go to the highest bidder and again, all the proceeds will be donated to charity,” Sean says.

Auckland fans can check out the Sounds Like a Blur exhibition at the Schooner Tavern from Friday 4 May to Saturday 19 May. Wellington audiophiles get their chance at the San Francisco Bath House from Monday 21 May to Monday 4 June.

The Sounds Like a Blur launch party will be held on Thursday 3 May at the Schooner Tavern in Auckland, while the Wellington closing party, featuring Knife Fight, Ghostrain and other special guests will be held on Thursday 31 May at the San Francisco Bath House.

During the past four years, Sean has had the pleasure of shooting some of the world’s greatest bands, including the White Stripes, Shihad, Elton John, Foo Fighters and Beastie Boys. He has photographed the last four Big Day Outs and is a regular at gigs in Wellington and Auckland.

Watch out for his 2007 Big Day Out photos coming up in Jet magazine.
