NZ Music Month - Radio One Posted: Fri Apr 25, 2008 10:06 am NZ MUSIC MONTH LIVE ON THE LOCAL 100% Live & Loud - direct from Radio One’s Studio during May. Every Thursday – 7pm on THE LOCAL with Dave. 7pm - Thursday 1st – UNDERTOW Undertow been producing music across all genres for the last five or so years. He’s supported some uber National/International talent including DJ Fierce, Concord Dawn, A-Sides, D-Bridge, Amit, Bulletproof, dDUB, Klute, Vanadis, Teknik, Trei, amongst other DJ’s from around New Zealand. 7pm - Thursday 8th – DELGIRL Delgirl are a three piece acoustic group who do as much avoiding of definition as they can. If pushed they’ll admit to playing skiffily, folky, country, jazzy, bluesy roots music with a Pacific edge. The result is a beautiful big harmony sound built around the double bass, guitar, ukuleles, banjo & snare/percussion. These three Dunedin based women musicians and songwriters have been making music together since 2000. In November 2007 they released their debut album “two, maybe three, days ride”. They sing really pretty. 7pm - Thursday 15th – Sonic Smith Inspired by the Big Beat sound, old school hip hop and new wave electro, Nic Smith’s music often never sounds like any of these. Loving raspy distorted synths and glitchy-"is it meant to sound like this" beats he ends up with an eclectic soundscape. 8 years after frying his brain, digital music has enabled new neurons to grow and he now has up to 96% of his brain fully functional under the psuedonym SoNic Smith. 7pm - Thursday 22nd – The Tweeks The Tweeks began life under the name The Gladeyes, back in 2002 but we know that now right? Right. They play up-beat guitar pop influenced by Sixties English pop, Eighties Dunedin and Manchester bands, Early-nineties Britpop and grunge, and Indie bands from the US and Canada of the last 15 years. Their sound can be described as dancey-fuzzy-guitar-pop, depending on how you feel about adjectives. 7pm - Thursday 29th – Alastair Galbraith One of the most admired yet paradoxically ignored NZ musicians is Alastair Galbraith. Starting out in Dunedin in the early 1980s Galbraith's first group The Rip recorded two EPs for Flying Nun, 'A Timeless Piece' and 'Stormed Port'. The first pretty much reflected the sounds defining South Island music at that time and Galbraith's singing and song writing, even at that young stage, had a big impact on those listening. Through time & space Alastair was part of several music projects including Handful Of Dust & Plagal Grind. His new album ‘ORB’ has just been released on his own label Nextbestway. |
