Real Groovy
Posted: Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:48 pm
This notice has been placed on the Real Groovy website:

As of the 14th October, Real Groovy has been placed in receivership. As a result we regret that VOUCHER purchases and VOUCHER redemption are suspended. We are doing our best to ensure that they will be valid again in the future.

However, the business is still operating and product purchases will continue as normal.

Yeah I went to get my mum a voucher last week and "due to a change of ownership" they had no vouchers. Stock was looking a bit sparse too.

this SUX. i like groovy, felt more homely and had a better (unique and hard to get) range. its a shame that the plastic convenience of jb hifi got the better of them. dnt get me wrong, i like jb but this is mainly their fault. how long will the shops be doing buisness for before they close for good?

The ChCh one went downhill once all the old "Echo Records" staff started leaving.

Eh, the ChCh one can eat a back of dicks. Overpriced. Imports take FOREVER (seriously, months, even over a year for some imports).

I'd have to agree, we always found them a pain in the ass to deal with.

A wee while ago, we used to use their affiliate links on here, basically "Buy Now" buttons then to the CD listings on our artist pages. We just experimented with this for a while, and never really pushed it. However, we were putting through about $3-$4k a month in sales.

So a few months went by and we'd accumulated $200 or so in commissions and so decided to get a payment from them. What a friggen hassle! Ended up talking to some Manager/Director and getting it sorted.

Then they upgraded their website a little while ago, and kind of left out all of the affiliate stuff, so everything we had set up basically stopped working. Seeking a solution, I talked to them and shared some ideas about how to improve the affiliate process to help both muzic.net.nz and RealGroovy out. They were really positive about it and agreed to talk to their developers to come up with a solution.

Since then (over a year ago) I have heard absolutely nothing from them, despite repeat attempts to find out what was going on. They still owe us a bit in affiliate payments too, but I have written that off. Definitely not going to see any of that money now! Laughing

Personally I think that their business model stagnated and the company did nothing to move ahead with the times. Instead of working out a way to compete with The Warehouse/JB Hifi they just sat on their asses and hoped it would all just sort itself out. Feel sorry for the people working in the stores, but hopefully they have a bit more of a "clue" about music than the average music retailer, so won't have a problem finding a new job.

Woah, well there ya go.

I feel for the staff there too... in the last year I've noticed a HUGE staff turnaround, and they seemed unhappy whenever they served me.

More from the Real Groovy website:

You may be aware that Real Groovy is in receivership. We thought that we should let you know what this may mean to you.

WEBSITE
The Real Groovy website is still operating - the only difference is that we cannot issue or redeem online vouchers at the moment. As always, if you place an order on the website, your credit card IS NOT CHARGED until the goods are sent, so there is no risk to you.

REAL GROOVY STORES
All Real Groovy stores are still open. However, we are not purchasing or trading your unwanted items at the moment and we are not issuing vouchers or credit notes. We are still taking special orders and our bins are full of bargains - we encourage you to keep providing your valuable support.

REAL GROOVY CLUB
The Real Groovy Club is still operating - you will continue to receive points and bonuses, when they are due.

INSURANCE CUSTOMERS
If you have an insurance claim to be fulfilled by Real Groovy, it has been temporarily put on hold. We ask you to be patient, and we will advise you by email once we have resolved the situation.

THE FUTURE
We are committed to keeping Real Groovy going and are working hard to ensure that this happens. We hope to be able to start accepting Real Groovy vouchers and credit notes again and, while we cannot make any promises, we recommend that you keep them safe until you hear from us.

YOUR SUPPORT
We have been overwhelmed by the support that we have received from a lot of our customers, and our staff are really grateful for the patience, understanding and courtesy that has been shown to them in this difficult time. We're all hoping for a really positive outcome and for Real Groovy to continue well into the future.

Thank you

The Real Groovy Team

It's a shame to see a good store eaten away by the likes of JB Hi-Fi.....truly the McDonalds of Music!!

Still, I do agree with the poster who said their business model stagnated. In such a dynamic market, can't keep doing the same-old same-old......

At least in Auckland we still have Beat Merchants, which is a premier vinyl destination, and in ChCh there's Galaxy.

I know BM will order anything and ship nationwide. It's all about the niche stores now

Yeah, you've gotta move with the times. Look what happened to Soundz.

RG do have a LOT of totally redundant stock. Stuff you can't give away it's that bad. Worse than the $2 CD's you find at Cash Converters.

The old staff at ChCh Real Groovy were mostly the staff from the old "Echo Records" and were the kind of staff to pull you over as soon as you walk in going "Hey, you'd really be into this stuff", or "Hey remember that album you were after, it just came in!"... now it's different staff everytime I go there. And they all look miserable to be there. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes but the staff were rather unhappy from the tricklings of gossip I've heard.
