Here's a punk rock story that will warm the cockles of your heart. Posted: Sun Nov 1, 2009 11:50 am Michael Burkett, otherwise known as 'Fat Mike', had some off the wall advice for Nick Douch when he met him at the Auckland Town Hall recently. Shortly before he was due to take the stage with NOFX the band he co-founded and leads, this mischievous purveyor of paragon punk raced out of a side room and confronted Nick. "So you support Child Cancer" asserts Fat Mike, "Well I don't. I am against it. I totally oppose it. We should eliminate it. Maybe you should change the name of the organisation to the Child Anti-Cancer Foundation. That might send a clearer message" Says Nick "I didn't quite know what to make of it to start with because after all they are one of the most successful independent acts of all time, having sold over 6 million albums, so I figured he must know what he's talking about. But then he winked and started grinning and I knew he was on our side! Nick, who is drummer for local band Eqwanox (who help brand and profile the Child Cancer Foundation with a direct link to the CCF website from the bands myspace page and with shout outs at their live gigs), and who is studying towards a Music Degree at Wintec in Hamilton, is a co-organiser for the Fill The House Tickets Project. The Project organises tickets to shows for Child Cancer Foundation families to give them some welcome time out from the stresses and strains of dealing with a child with cancer. "We've always had support from NOFX and other bands on the Fat WreckChords label when they tour here' says Nick, 'and it's great to be able to offer Child Cancer Foundation families that are into punk music the opportunity to see some of their favourite bands perform live. It's a great 'time-out' for them when they need it most." Will the Child Cancer Foundation be changing its name in line with 'Fat Mike's' comments? 'I don't think so' says Nick, 'but we've all had a good laugh over the suggestion. Maybe head office will bring it up at the next AGM", he chuckles with a wink and a grin to rival 'Fat Mikes'! |
