IMNZ July News Posted: Tue Aug 10, 2004 8:39 pm Read on to find out what's been happening in the busy world of NZ Independent Music! Happy birthday to the IMNZ Independent Chart! The chart turns one this month and a big hip-hip-hooray goes out to everyone who has contributed to it, charted on it and read it. Kia ora to our number one band this month, Shapeshifter. The nominees for this year’s b-Net New Zealand Music Awards were announced on July 5 and we’d like to congratulate the impressive swag of IMNZ artists that made the grade - 26 in all so good luck to ‘em all and get voting everyone! Congratulations to the Misfits Of Science for their number one!!! single Fools Love, which has also gone gold - a great first outing for Simon Holloway & Adee Keil’s new label HooF, through BMG. The Fools Love Ragga Remix video is out at the end of July and their second single Mmhmm is out early August. Congratulations also to the Fast Crew whose single I Got (King Music) is nearly gold and has now been in the top 10 for 4 weeks. Dawn Raid Entertainment has announced a worldwide publishing joint venture with Universal Music Publishing Australia. The Dawn Raid Publishing/Universal Music Publishing Joint Venture will see the Dawn Raid team operate as the A&R source, bringing to the deal a number of platinum and multi-platinum NZ writers. Universal will operate on an administration, synchronisation and creative level. In international news, one of Whirimako Black’s new songs will be released on a UK compilation, plus she’s been invited to the UK for media interviews and a live performance on BBC radio. She’s also received invitations from musicians from Greece and Ghana to collaborate on future projects. Dave Graham of Kahu Records is off to Japan, China and South Korea for three months, promoting the label and looking at live performance opportunities for NZ artists/groups and joint ventures between production houses. Reliable Recordings have recently secured distribution in the USA and Japan. The first release will be a 12” featuring tracks from Cuffy&LeonD, Reed and Radley and the Sun Valley All Stars, due out towards the end of August. 8 Foot Sativa’s album ‘Season For Assault’ is released worldwide September 13 through Intergalactic’s license deal with Sweden’s Black Mark Records. This will be a simultaneous release in Europe, USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan and beyond. Intergalactic Records welcome Auckland metallers Subtract to the label, and their new album ‘Formula One’ is out now. Subtract will be touring NZ with 8 Foot Sativa and Aussies Frankenbok. Shapeshifter are touring Australia on the eve of releasing their second album ‘Riddim Wise’ LP. They’ve had appearances on Channel V and Channel 7 and graced the covers of music magazines 3Dworld, Inpress, Beat and Bragg. Shapeshifter’s videos have been picked up by all major music video channels and they’re on Triple J. Shapeshifter MC P Digsss has been touring and recording throughout Europe, working with the likes of London Elektricity, The Logistics, and The Next Men. They start a New Zealand tour on August 27. Barry Saunders and The Warratahs went down well at the Norfolk Island Country Music Festival, and they’re heading into the studio to record an album. Meanwhile Paul Ubana Jones is on tour in Europe. Trip have released their track Buddha to radio, featuring Greg Johnson on flugelhorn, and the new Trip album tentatively titled ‘The best international million selling jazz album EVER’ is scheduled for release early next year (which incidentally will be Pagan’s 20th Anniversary); and Crumb’s new single Pick Up The Pieces has just hit radio and TV. Wellington pedal steel guitarist Winnie Winston received a Creative NZ grant to record an album on Red Rocks records, to be co-produced by Nick Bollinger (Windy City Strugglers) and David Long (ex-Mutton Birds). Windy City Strugglers also received Creative NZ funding towards a tour of Europe in early 2005 to promote their album Kingfisher. Round Trip Mars is currently basking in the reflected glory of critical acclaim for SJD’s album ‘Southern Lights’. The last two SJD gigs have sold out well in advance and his national tour with full band (now including Paul ‘Gramsci’ McLaney) kicks off at the end of August. Look out for a cheeky, never-to-be-released, live exclusive from Phelps & Munro (recorded at the SJD album launch at the Kings Arms) on the b-Net. In other tour news, The Managers’ re-jigged line-up is touring the South Island during July. Gahu will be playing at the Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival, August 13 to 15. Conray had a rare live outing at Onefest in Dunedin, and performances in Wellington and Auckland are planned in the near future. Conray’s alter-ego Dale Cotton has been in demand in his producer role, with recent acts including The Fanatics, Pine, Meterman, The Chills, and David (JPSE, Stereobus) Yetton, so any new Conray stuff is a wee way away. You may have seen Andrew Maitai from Powertool Records on TV3 News recently talking about touring Finnish muso Mikael H alongside Daisy Chain Halo and Feyodor, who all have records out now. Saturday July 31 sees Kaleidoscope 10 at the Kings Arms, and Kaleidoscope 11 is scheduled for August 20 at Refuel in Dunedin. 4th Element began a national tour this July to promote their debut album ‘Raw Nu Inventions’. 833 Records are also working with US MCs such as: Shyhiem, King Just and Raekwon from the Wu Tang Clan, on a variety of projects. Albino’s first single A-L-B-I To The N-O is out now and Albino has approached King Gordy - featured in ‘8 Mile’ and associate of Eminem- to collaborate on a new track. 833 have also joined forces with BrickFace Records in New Jersey to bring you ‘Heavy Weightz’. This marks the first official full-length collaborative effort between NZ and American hip hop. The first single will be at radio at the end of July. http://www.indies.co.nz/ |
