Music industry news is a regular forum feature here on muzic.net.nz, and is created by Karen Temple, who amongst other things, was the owner for the premier live NZ music venue of its time The Temple.

If you are somehow involved in the music industry, I recommend that you read this forum. There are lots of useful things here, including people looking for bands to join, radio stations and events looking for performers and music workshops.

1. Performing Artists Workshops

Date: Saturday 12 February 2005
Venue: ST Colombus Centre @ 40 Vermont Street, Ponsonby.

Price: This workshop is free to Musicians Union and Comedy Guild members, however non members are welcome for a cost of $40.

This workshop will cover how to get free stuff, entertainment law, festivals and much much more.

The cost for joining the musicians union is $182.00 per year, or $15.17 per month. They offer free contracts, taxation advice, musical instrument insurance and many other things that assist musicians in their working life. For more info and/or to chat about it contact Peter Shannon on:

You can just come for one workshop, or do the whole day - whatever interests you. There are three or more workshops on simultaneously - pick one.

8:30am to 9am:

9:15 to 10:45am:
- Dealing With The Media - presented by Nick Grant from OnFilm
- OR Copyright And Entertainment Law - presented by Dominic Sheehan of the Writers' Guild and Paul Ellis from the music industry/NZ Idol judge
- OR Budgeting On An Erractic Income - presented by someone from the Auckland Budgeting service.

11am to 12:30pm:
- Negotiation Skills presented by Jeremy Corbett, Teresa Brown from Actors' Equity and Dominic Sheehan from the Writers' Guild
- OR Taxation (particularly as it relates to creative types)
- OR Copyright & Entertainment Law (again)
- OR Free Stuff presented by Penny Ashton and Tim Thorpe from the Screen Council

Then there's a FREE Lunch and the official public launch of the CCUG

1:30 to 3pm:
- Free Stuff (again)
- OR Dealing With Agents presented by Graeme Dunster from Auckland Actors
- OR Sales And Marketing
- OR Liasion Session presented by people from various parts of the country, who will talk about how to get involved with the CCUG

3:15 to 4:45pm:
- FESTIVALS - one for comedy, one for musicians, one for actors:
There'll be a handout with information about festivals in NZ and around the world and how to be part of them; plus wild stories from festivals; plus hot tips on how to get the most of them, what you can expect and what reasonable festival goals should be.

2. Young Talent Wanted

National Radio is looking for young aspiring musicians and bands from Timaru, Invercargill and Whangarei for live-to-airs. All genres wanted. Must live & perform locally.

National Radio is especially interested in musicians or bands who are planning on releasing an album or EP during 2005.

3. Acoustic Open Mic

Venue: Suede Lounge Bar, 213 Symonds Street, Auckland
Featuring:Nick Hohepa as house artist.
When: Every second Tuesday. Next session is on the 22nd of Feb.

The PA system, two mics and a small acoustic drum kit will be provided.

Extra percussion instruments welcome. Please provide own guitars. Very relaxing and intimate enviroment.

11. Free Music Sector Workshops

These workshops come under the Enterprise Training Programme. They are fully funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and is for any person who is trading or part of a business that is trading.

The two workshops initially running are:

- Effective Time Management - 16 February from 2pm to 5pm
- Effective Goal Setting and Business Planning - 22 March from 10am to 5:30pm
