Born Bad: when good rockstars do bad things

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS
When good people do bad things

19 July 2005

Mischievous Auckland duo The Blunts are venturing into Wellington to perform their first ever show at Indigo Bar and Venue with rap'n'roll pals Coco Solid this weekend. The Blunts and Coco Solid have asked Wellington wild live cats Lady Luck, The Users and Knife Fight to join them in 'Born Bad', a show that can only be forecasted as one of mass rock'n'roll destruction.

Even if you're seen them a million times, watching The Blunts will make you feel hot, sweaty and slightly on edge every time. At their last Wellington show a member of the audience became so enthused in the drummer's trademark messiah call and answer antics, that they jumped onto the drum kit and had a drunken bang of the gear themselves. The Blunts were forced to play the remainder of their set with cymbal stands that bowled over like dominoes with every hit. Obviously The Blunts did something right that night: they got the town talking and soon enough, their debut single, 'Weapon of Mass Destruction', hit the top spot on Top 11 Chart on Wellington's Radio Active.

Also making a reputed return to Wellington are rap'n'roll duo Coco Solid. Last time Coco Solid played in the Wellington, the duo's hip-hop bravado, rock'n'roll attitude and killer banter had the dance floor packed like sardines and dripping with sweat like a 50 cent video clip. And that was on a school night! These electrorappers have made rhyming cool again, seducing and shaking live crowds with a booty-bass and trademark electro all their own.

Wellington's Lady Luck play cheeky rock tunes with a disco back-beat and have been described as putting on a show like a 'mad persons sh*t'. Lady Luck made their Auckland debut with Coco Solid and The Blunts earlier this year and are looking forward to welcoming the wild live-cats to the city in true Lady Luck 'live' style. Last time they played at Indigo, Lady Luck's lead singer ended up climbing the Indigo rafters and got stuck up there mid-set in nothing but a Karen Walker cocktail dress and heels.

Local rock'n'roll heroes The Users blend catchy and dancy rock'n'roll tunes with a 'take the piss' attitude, singing about cultural icons such as Jerry Lee Lewis and the bible (with lines like 'I haven't read the bible, but I've heard that it is good'). This fast and furious foursome are expected to give The Blunts a run for their money on Saturday night, as they are lead by frontman Mr Menno who screams so passionately that he manages to take half the microphone out.

Wellington secret rockers Knife Fight are so bloody antagonistic that their identities are concealed under a psuedo Wellington Rock Witness Protection Programme. This three piece spew out a distorted flurry of non stop passion and electrifying energy.

And to keep the restless partiers happy between the madness, DJ Blink will be spinning savage sounds of 80's and indie dancefloor hits.

Indigo is open till 6am on Sunday morning. Better shimmy up those converse sneakers and prepare to get them worn in all over again this Saturday night.
