Mego legend Peter Rehberg visits NZ Posted: Wed Jan 18, 2006 5:21 pm An Alt.music presentation in association with Artspace Peter Rehberg, Rosy Parlane and Lovely Midget Tuesday January 24, 2006, doors 7pm, starts 8pm Door sales only, venue capacity strictly limited. The Classic, 321 Queen St, $10/8 The prospect of having Vienna-based electronic pioneer Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) perform in Auckland may seem too incredible to believe, but we jest not, this will actually happen next Tuesday. The Alt.music team have just confirmed luring Rehberg away from an intensive Australian tour schedule for just long enough to do an Auckland gig at The Classic, 321 Queen St, with support from Rosy Parlane and Lovely Midget. Peter Rehberg is co-founder of cutting-edge Austrian computer music label Mego, also home to Christian Fennesz whose Endless Summer album was on everyone's year's best list a few years back. Helping redefine the aesthetics of minimal electronica, glitch, noise and techno, Rehberg is one of the most innovative experimental European musicians of the last decade. As a solo artist performing under the moniker Pita, he is one of the pioneers of the dissonant digital noise-music scene that he helped define during the '90s, alongside other influential artists such as Fennesz, Ramon Bauer, Zbigniew Karkowski, Russell Haswell and Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio. He has worked with a long list of artists all over the world, notably a collaborative album with NZ's Rosy Parlane under the name Rosenberg and a recurring collaboration with Christian Fennesz and Jim O Rourke (Sonic Youth/Wilco etc) as Fenn O'Berg. Other collaborations have seen him play alongside some of experimental music's best-known performers, including Keith Rowe, AMM, MIMEO, Kaffe Matthews, Marcus Schmickler, Sonic Youth, Jérôme Noetinger, General Magic, Tina Frank, Russell Haswell and Florian Hecker, as well as being a member of MIMEO. He won the Distinction Prize for Digital Musics at Ars Electronica in 1999, has also collaborated with choreographers Meg Stuart, Chris Haring, Gisele Vienne (DACM), Gyula Berger, and took part in the 2nd Göteborg Art Biennale, Against All Evens. Rosy Parlane started playing music in 1993 as drummer and pianist for the improvised rock trio Thela alongside Dion Workman and Dean Roberts. He subsequently began working with abstract electronic-based music, both as a solo artist and as Parmentier with Dion Workman. His full and intricate soundscapes are comprised of of sample-loops, pianos, guitars, and field recordings manipulated via digital means. Parlane has released three solo albums; two for Sigma Editions, and the most recent, Iris, for UK label Touch in 2004. Over the last few years he has also collaborated on releases with Austrian musicians Christian Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, as well as with Eddie Prevost of AMM and Mattin. Other projects include Pit Viper, Empirical and Parmentier. Under the moniker of Lovely Midget, Rachel Shearer creates aural landscapes from foreign spaces using sounds that have been digitally stripped and scrubbed down to their raw underlying textures. These are then painstakingly reconstructed into new audio environments. As an editor/designer Shearer strives to complement visuals with 'real' (at times surreal) aural environments. After an EP in 1995 for Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, the first Lovely Midget album was released in 2000 on Corpus Hermeticum. North Head was issued by American Label Family Vineyard in 2003 and a new release, Fakerie, is scheduled for later this year. Alt.music is an ongoing series of events, regularly bringing a vital injection of contemporary sound art from around the world to Auckland. Peter Rehberg's performance is the first of these shows, which will take place several times a year. Founded by Auckland gallery Artspace, Alt.music began as an international festival of experimental music and sound art in 2001, followed by successive festivals in 2002 and 2004. Previous Alt.Music artists include Pan Sonic, Tetuzi Akiyama, Jon Rose, Voice Crack, Sachiko M, Francisco Lopez, Pierre Bastien, Oren Ambarchi, Alan Licht Richard Nunns and the Dead C.
