Damian Marley coming to NZ

For the first time in New Zealand, the youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, is coming for a one-off show.

Damian Marley is celebrating the release of his critically acclaimed album 'Welcome to Jamrock'. The single and title track off the album was a huge hit internationally and was the biggest reggae track of 2005.

Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley grew up around the intensely musical atmosphere of his father's Hope Road home. His nickname Jr. Gong is derived from his father's nickname of Tuff Gong. Damian shares with his brothers and sisters a full-time career in the Marley family business, music. However, unlike his brothers and sisters, his musical specialty is "deejaying", the Jamaican style of rapping.

By the age of 13 Jr. Gong had formed his first band with the son of Cat Coore from Third World. He made noise early on with his 1996 album Mr Marley. Then his major label debut 'Halfway Tree' showcased a unique gift for blending hard-hitting reality rhymes and an uncommonly eclectic musicality. This album won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2002.

Damian can’t wait to come to New Zealand, he says “I have been told that New Zealand is a country that loves reggae music so I'm very excited about coming down there. Give thanks.”

Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is performing at Auckland’s St James on April 7, 2006 supported by New Zealand songstress Anika Moa and The Plastic Tiki Band.
