POSIES special guests - Voom – Simon Coomber
Posted: Mon Feb 27, 2006 6:01 pm
Voom first formed in the early 90’s when Buzz Moller joined forces with Mac Macaskill and Danny Manetto. In 1999 they released their popular first album on Antenna Records, which featured radio hits ‘Beth’ and ‘Relax.’ The group soon developed into, dejected NZ underground legends before they received more success with further radio hits ‘Jimmy’s Boner’ and ‘King Kong,’ the later nominated for a NZ silver scroll award in 2002.

The band now has a new lineup with Buzz Moller and Nick Buckton being joined by Murray Fisher and Mike Beehre formally of Goodshirt. As Goodshirt is no-longer functioning as a band Murray and Mike have joined Voom full time. Their considerable expertise gathered over years of being in one of the most successful NZ pop-rock groups ever, has really helped develop the Voom sound. So with a NZ super group of sorts being formed, a new album is set for release at the end of March and now you can check out the new line up and their live show as they join the bill with The Posies at The Studio on Tue 6 March.

Simon Comber completed a Graduate Diploma in Music at Otago University (which included some composition papers under Dr. Graeme Downes, one of his fave songwriters in the whole world.) During 3 years as a part-time student (Jekyll) by day and songwriter (Hyde) by night, Simon won a composition award, received some funding from Creative NZ towards producing a debut album, and played the odd gig supporting various Dunedin bands.

Simon Comber's debut album Pre-Pill Love: 11 concise and vivid narrative songs about (among other things) horror movies, life at catholic boarding schools and men who would probably make decent husbands if only they didn't think The Man With No Name was so damn cool.

His new album is ready to record and the Verlaines connection keeps growing with Darren Stedman on drums. Simon will be kicking off proceedings with an acoustic set on what is shaping up as a unique and interesting performance evening.
