Deep in the heart of May, New Zealand Music Month, is Palmerston North’s own music festival, SwampFest. Now in its third year, SwampFest 06 has become a weeklong celebration of original music in Palmerston North.

Named for the city’s origins as a primordial swamp, the title belies the diversity and quality of music on offer. SwampFest 06 brings together Ska, Hip Hop, Metal, Pop, Emo and Bing Turkby*, a reflection on the breadth of the Palmerston North music scene. Palmerston North has a flourishing and supportive scene and this mix of styles is a perfect indicator of its current depth and strength.

New features is this year’s SwampFest 06 are workshop evenings and a move to an all ages venue. The Globe Theatre will play host to three All Ages events, Friday and Saturday night and a Sunday Matinee. Bands will also appear on concourse at Massey University and instore at Mango Music. Leading up to the shows will be a series of workshops and seminars featuring leading practioners from the local and national music industry. From ‘Tuning Your Drum Kit’ with St Peters College Music HOD Jon Bowen, to NZ On Air funding with Brendan Smythe (NZOA’s head honcho!) SwampFest 06 will also host the release of Slave Recordings’ local compilation CD, ‘Dawn of a Grey Winter’. ‘DOAGW’ was made with the assistance of CSSI and the Manawatu Evening Standard and many of the acts featured on the compilation will be appearing live at SwampFest 06.

SwampFest continues to grow and is a highlight on the music calendar. The inaugural festival held in 2004, featured 8 bands over two nights. Following on from its success, SwampFest 05 ran for three days, featured 14 bands and culminated with a live DVD . SwampFest 06 is now an all ages event and runs for an entire week. Behind this ongoing strength is the high level of support musicians receive from community groups and businesses alike - original music is nurtured and performed at The Stomach (a community recording studio, supported by the P.N. City Council), played on Radio Control 99.4 FM, and sold at Mango Music.

SwampFest 06 is a non-profit festival shamelessly promoting the wealth of talent in Palmerston North. Co-ordinated by Creative Sounds AKA the Stomach, and with generous support from local businesses, volunteers and the musicians themselves.

6pm - Beginner DJ’ technique
Chris Hicken. With over 10 years of DJ experience Chris is well know in Palmerston North and a regular performer in the city under the moniker TwentyForty.

7.30pm - Music Video
Craig Johnston aka Bing Turkby, local musician and music video maker.
Greg Page is one of New Zealands foremost music video makers and recently released his first feature length film. Outpost Digital Media produced the SF05 DVD and regularly film slots for TVNZ.

Wednesday - Media is the Message

6pm - Street Promotion
Craig Black & Jimmy 'Snuff' Bicknell are both long time local musicians with extensive knowledge on how to make and deliver flyers, posters and other forms of street promotion.

7.30pm - Industry Promotion
Regan Hawea, Radio Control. Liz Barry, National Radio.
Station Managers, Program Directors and On Air presenters from local and national broadcasters will inform the public on how to get your product noticed by them.

Thursday - Free Money

6pm - Funding
Brendan Smythe is the head of NZ On Air. Patricia Brown Manager of the P.N. Community Arts Council. Daniell Tolson, music advisor for Creative NZ.

7.30pm - Industry Advice
Cath Anderson is the CEO of the NZ Music Industry Commission and Petrina George is head of Membership Services at APRA.
