Hard Ons Posted: Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:26 pm MOST PEOPLE ARE A WASTE OF TIME – released Monday 10th April on Chatterbox Records thru Global Routes Everybody knows that The Hard-Ons have always been a pop band, right? That links to folks like Henry Rollins and bands like Poison Idea aside, they’ve always harboured a not-so-secret fetish for the enormous and soaring melodies of Big Star? It’s there on Smell My Finger. It’s there on Yummy.! And it’s most definitely there on 2003’s Very Exciting!. However, this tendency has always been tempered by their equal love of thrash, hardcore and metal. So, for their tenth full-length studio album, The Hard-Ons – Ray Ahn, Blackie and Pete Kostic - decided to try something a little different. They decided to make a pop record – a pure power pop record, but done in that unique Hard-Ons way. They’re still playing with the same irreverent fury that has made them perennial live favourites around the globe, but they’re doing so with a batch of songs that in a perfect world would be FM radio hits. “We tried to play as brutally as we normally do,” explains Ray. “The heavy handedness is still there: downstrokes, distortion, etcetera. We wanted to juxtapose the thick punk sound with melodies, harmonies and the odd melodic open-chord chiming guitar. As someone said in a review for us a long time ago, making a Frankenstein’s monster pop by grafting the heart and mind of The Beach Boys onto the body of Motorhead.” Their next record, planned for the not-too-distant future, will feature plenty of thrash, hardcore and metal but no pop whatsoever; an aggressive counterpoint to the overall sweetness of Most People Are A Waste Of Time. Anyway, if you consider yourself a music fan and you’ve not heard the name Hard-Ons then shame on you. Certainly the Hard-Ons are, or should be a house-hold name in every country!!!!! And here’s why… “Man! These guys are great! I love the fat guy!" IGGY POP - Big Day Out, Perth Aust. FACT: The Hard Ons represented and advocated punk metal nearly a decade before the Epitaph label in the US was propelling bands like Offspring, Pennywise, Rancid, Down By Law and NOFX into the mainstream. The Hard-Ons were doing Green Day before Green Day could talk. FACT: Between 1984 and 1993, they produced an unbeaten run of 17 consecutive #1 independent singles, EP’s & albums. FACT: Grammy Award winning Foo Fighters, The Ramones and The Red Hot Chili Peppers specifically asked for the band as opening act for their respective Australian tours. FACT: On the recent Foo Fighters tour (Jan 2003), frontman Dave Grohl invaded the stage at Melbourne Festival Hall and joined the Hard-Ons for a performance of the old Motorhead classic “Ace Of Spades”! FACT: A German soap star character always wears a Hard-Ons T-shirt and in one show suggested that his depressed mother come to a Hard-Ons' gig to lift her spirits. FACT: In Spain fans are so fanatical they have Hard-Ons tattoos and once when the band arrived at a club in Madrid to be guest DJs for the night they found the place covered wall to wall with murals of Ray's art work. FACT: Sixties' acid punk icon, Sky Saxon of The Seeds came to one of their US shows and asked if the guys would be his backing band on a forthcoming album. FACT: The Fulham Greyhound in London sold out at eight in the evening and reduced the venue to a pool of sweat that a writer for NME likened to "Beirut in a heatwave." Also reviewing the night was Melody Maker who said that "The Hard-Ons are the touch paper and the crowd are the matches." FACT: During Henry Rollins' 1990 Australian tour he joined the band to record a version of AC/DC's Let There Be Rock FACT: On the recommendation of Rollins, the band were asked to open for the at the time immensely popular Red Hot Chili Peppers FACT: Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith did their lights when they toured together for a second time. After that they did another seven New Zealand shows with the Chilli Peppers FACT: The HARD-ONS DISCOGRAPHY is so long, we won’t bother with it. Go to their website.
