Posted: Fri Oct 20, 2006 11:01 am
I just heard last night that Shihad and the Datsuns are going on a national tour this summer.

Any idea of dates and locations anyone?

Here's some info from stuff.co.nz:

If you're looking for a dose of rock this summer, news that two of New Zealand's biggest bands are combining for a joint tour will bring a smile to your face.

Shihad and The Datsuns, New Zealand's best live rock acts, have announced they will pair up for a December-January summer tour.

The tour kicks off in Mangawahi on December 26 and ends in Wellington on January 6, including what will surely be one of the heaviest New Year's Eve gigs at Lake Hawea in Wanaka.

The tour also hits some small centres, with Waihi, Coroglen and Riwaka included on the schedule.

Shihad's last album Love is the New Hate was proclaimed to be one of their best. They plan on hitting the studio after the tour to begin recording a new record.

The Datsuns' latest effort, Smoke and Mirrors has been hailed as a return to form.

Christian Datsun says the band is looking forward to the tour.

"I miss being on the road for two years. Honestly, I do. You don't have to worry about your tax return, or your laundry. You can forget about that, just play some music.

"I'd just like to keep on doing it as long as I possibly can, until they have to wheel me into the retirement home, into which I will go, fighting."

Tickets for the shows are available through Ticketek from October 30.

Tour dates:
December 26, Mangawhai Tavern, Mangawhai
December 27, St James, Auckland
December 28, Waihi Beach Hotel, Waihi
December 29, Brewers Stadium, Mt Maunganui
December 30, Coroglen Tavern, Coroglen
December 31, Lake Hawea Hotel, Lake Hawea
January 2, Riwaka Hotel, Riwaka
January 4, Butlers Reef Hotel, New Plymouth
January 5, East Pier, Napier
January 6, Wellington Town Hall, Wellington

Official Press Release:

The Greatest NZ Summer Rock N Roll Tour Extravaganza can now be unveiled…

SHIHAD and the DATSUNS join forces for THE rock tour of Summer.

With global reputations for raw, unpredictable, and incendiary live performances, both SHIHAD and The DATSUNS combine this summer for what will be a national tour not to be missed. Kicking off in Mangawahi on December 26, this mammoth rock event stops at 10 centres nationwide including Lake Hawea in Wanaka for New Year’s Eve en-route to what is sure to be a an epic grand finale in Wellington on January 6th .

SHIHAD are currently finalising the plans to record their new album, the follow up to ‘Love Is The New Hate’, and recording is due to begin immediately following the tour.

Highlights of the last 18 months since the release of their last album have included; platinum sales, a Tui award for Best Rock Album (2005), a nomination in the Australian music awards in the same category and the release of their first ever DVD, ‘SHIHAD Live At Aotea Square’.

On the live circuit, SHIHAD were a part of the New Zealand and Australian national 2006 Big Day Out tour and were included on other major festivals including Splendour in the Grass 2005, Rock It 2006, Rippon 2006. Earlier this year, SHIHAD had 2 massive shows at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London and of course the show at AUT in Auckland shows SHIHAD are well primed to unleash their irrepressible live energy.

Fans of rock will also be champing at the bit to see The DATSUNS back in action. Their recently released third album “Smoke & Mirrors” has been wowing critics with its bigger, bolder more sophisticated take on trashy rock and roll.

They put this newfound maturity down to spending most of last year writing. By the end of 2005 they had amassed forty odd songs and were surprised by the range of songs they had in the mix. In true DATSUNS’ style, the album is finished and now they’re itching to return to the road!

"Now, finally," says Christian Datsun, the impatience near-tangible in his voice, "we can play some shows again.

I miss being on the road for two years. Honestly, I do. You don’t have to worry about your tax return, or your laundry. You can forget about that, just play some music. I’d just like to keep on doing it as long as I possibly can, until they have to wheel me into the retirement home, into which I will go, fighting."

Organise your summer now for this supersonic cacophony of Rock! It’s gonna be ACE!

SHIHAD with The DATSUNS? Gentlemen, we salute you.
