AK07 Posted: Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:49 am Westpac and Auckland Festival, AK07 Proudly Announce the Programme for Red Square @ Britomart Heart of Auckland Festival, AK07, 9-25 March 2007 Tickets Go On Sale Today! 17 days and nights…30 bands…18 solo performances…21 free music events…2 beautifully themed venues…1 outdoor stage… a garden bar and cafe…an open-air cinema series…plus the world’s wildest and wettest cabaret show performed in the seductive mirrored walls of The Famous Spiegeltent… Auckland’s downtown Britomart precinct will be transformed during Auckland Festival, AK07 into a throbbing multi-venue hub with live entertainment every night. Auckland’s newest “hotspot”, named Red Square@Britomart is proudly sponsored by Westpac and comprises two themed venues, the world renowned The Famous Spiegeltent and the AK07 Festival Club plus an outdoor garden bar & café with specially laid lawn- a perfect setting for picnicking or just soaking up the festive air. Every night during Auckland Festival, AK07, The Famous Spiegeltent and the AK07 Festival Club will delight Festival-goers with an irresistible line-up of local and international talent performing a variety of musical, burlesque and cabaret acts unlikely to be seen outside a Festival programme. Westpac and Auckland Festival, AK07 are especially delighted to welcome The Famous Speigeltent to Red Square@Britomart - as it is the first time the Spiegeltent will be part of the Auckland Festival. “The Spiegeltent is a Festival must-have – it’s been enjoyed by Festival-goers all over the world since it began it’s long career as the house-mistress of the world’s best and most sought after performers. We are thrilled to have the Spiegeltent, in all its glory, right here in downtown Auckland,” says Auckland festival Director David Malacari. The Auckland Festival, AK07 Spiegeltent season is headlined by the famed cabaret group ‘La Clique’, a sell-out sensation that feature an astonishing array of the sexiest and funniest routines you’ll ever see. Sold out at this year’s Sydney Festival, La Clique offers a unique and inspirational night of live entertainment NOT TO BE MISSED. “This (La Clique) is Cirque du Soleil’s younger sister.. more brash, less inhibited and more naked! Far raunchier, funnier and more intimate than its better known forerunner. Truly mesmerizing!” The New York Times. Also playing at the Speigeltent are iconic New Zealand and international artists including Don McGlashan, Dave Dobbyn, The Windy City Strugglers, Jubilation Gospel Choir, Paul Zenon (yes – the famous magician!), Goldenhorse, Batucada Sound Machine, Aronos Quartet, Annie Crummer, Kurt Weill, one million dollars, The Beat Girls, Lior and Lucid 3. Complimenting the Famous Spiegeltent and the Spiegel Bar and Café is the AK07 Festival Club, where every night you can listen to a superb selection of live summer sounds. Watch out for the two famed Australian acts, Eddie Perfect and the Spaghetti Western Orchestra (formerly known as the Ennio Morricone Experience), both hits from the Edinburgh Festival and sure to delight local audiences with their musical wit and charm. The AK07 Festival Club also boasts; A Brazilian Night Out, which sees some of Brazils homegrown talent shake their booty; New Caledonian Roots Music; Ben Kemp and his Japanese band Uminari; Bravura and Besser; Celenod; and all the way from France and Berlin are Fred Avril and Barbara Morgenstern; plus we welcome home Nathan Haines and welcome back Urban Symphony. There’s also evenings hosted by the Steve Able Band with help from Anna Coddington; Tama Waipara; Whirimako Black and a Maori Music Night which sees traditional and contemporary instruments being played by some of our finest Maori musicians. For those who fancy leaving work early, head to Westpac’s Red Square@Britomart in time for the Sunset Session which runs every day between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. More music is on offer – and what’s best it’s free – so you can splash out on a bite to eat and a drink at the Spiegel Bar and Café. As part of the Sunset Sessions you can catch the Sargam School of Indian Music, French Toast, DJ Bhangra, Dan Sperber, Auckland Youth Orchestra Players, Ride, Luke Hurley, Karen Hunter, Dj’s Cian and Andy Morton, Westpac Young Producers, Pacific Music Ensemble, Melhuish, Casey and Winterburn, Russel Walder and Whirimako Black, The Situations, Shaft, DJ’s Balkanetic and Stillan, The Mamaku Project and Tahuna Breaks. Every night Red Square@Britomart also hosts an open-air short film series based around the theme, ‘Cowboys and Clowns’. So bring a cushion, buy a drink from the bar and settle back on the grass next to The Famous Spiegeltent and the AK07 Festival Club to watch a series of films from Auckland Festival AK07’s geographic partners; Japan, Australia, UK, Canada, France, Germany, the USA and of course films from closer to home. There’s no doubt Westpac’s Red Square@Britomart is a huge occasion for celebration. With more than 1000 staff expected to be employed to man the two 2 tonne catering containers that will be permanently on-site and to service the thousands of people expected to pass through – Britomart will never be the same again! “Red Square@Britomart is a true reflection of the Auckland Festival’s vision and growth. Westpac is proud to be part of these exciting times. I look forward to seeing lots of other Aucklanders make the most of the opportunity to see and do so many interesting things in one place, especially as so much is free,” says Westpac Sponsorship Manager, Rose-Marie Schiavuzzi. Westpac has also been heavily involved in the Westpac Young Producers project, which in conjunction with the Auckland Festival, AK07, called for applicants between the ages of 14 and 18 to submit an event idea with a budget to the tune of $20,000. The winning group with the best idea was chosen last year and received a $20,000 Westpac Student Pac Account, free hire of Red Square, access to Auckland Festival offices and mentorship from industry experts in the fields of production, stage management, marketing, publicity, artist liaison and administration. This event, now named RIPPED, and produced by the Westpac Young Producers will take over Red Square @ Britomart from 2pm – 7pm on St Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17. Red Square will again be taken over by the younger generation during the final weekend of Auckland Festival, AK07, when 6-13 year olds share their wares; art, craft, trash or treasure, as part of Auckland’s first ever kids market. The event is called- Spiegelmarket and it will be a chance for young people to run their own creative enterprises. These young entrepreneurs are attending a series of special workshops at AUT city campus to help them learn about sustainable development, intellectual property, marketing, and the economy in a fun, interactive way.
