Gahu & Kojo Owusu Posted: Thu Mar 8, 2007 5:23 pm Ashanti Master Drummer Kojo Owusu here for Ghana Independence Day Celebrations and a performance with GAHU. GAHU presents Kojo Owusu at The Crib Friday March 16 151 Ponsonby Rd. Free entry 9pm start. Ghana Independence Day Celebrations Saturday March 17th War Memorial Hall Dominion Rd 2pm - 10pm.. All welcome. Kojo Noah Owusu, master drummer form the Ashanti kingdom of Ghana has settled in Australia and built a considerable reputation as a musician, performing with African Royal Drummers, Musikii Manjaro, Valanga Khoza, and his own group Kotoko Mma. He has been trained in the tradiional performing arts of his people since early childhood learning songs, dances and drums. As a young boy he joined the band led by Koo Nimo an innovator of the palmwine guitar style which was a forerunner of Ghana’s highlife music. As he grew older Kojo led his own bands and worked as a drum instructor and teacher of traditional dance at the University of Kumasi. He has performed professionally in Ghana, Europe and USA. On Saturday March 17th Kojo will lead the cultual music for the Ghana Independence Day accompanied by dancer Kwokua. On Friday March 16th Kojo is the special guest with the Auckland world jazz, Afrobeat and funk band GAHU. “Gahu stride between world music and jazz....with great energy, sociability and commitment...musically uplifting stuff."
