Regina Spektor
Posted: Thu Jun 7, 2007 7:01 pm
Regina Spektor is one of this generation’s most promising and awe-inspiring musicians, which is why it gives The Frontier Touring Company great pleasure to announce this songstress’ first ever visit to Australia and New Zealand. Regina will take her eclectic, piano-driven pop to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland this July.

Regina’s story is unlike most. Born in Russia in the eighties, she was raised in a musical household. Her mother was a music professor, and her father an amateur violinist. His influence - he traded cassette recordings of The Beatles and Queen with friends in the Soviet Union - helped bring Regina’s musical passion to the surface.

At the age of nine, Regina’s family emigrated first to Austria, then Italy, before settling into the Bronx in New York. Forced to leave her piano behind in the Soviet Union, Regina found a piano in the basement of her synagogue, which she continued to practice on, as well as using tabletops and hard surfaces.

From there, Regina has been unstoppable. From 2001 when she released her first independent record 11:11, Regina’s fan base built up thick and fast. Her sophomore release of Songs drew critical praise and further extended her fan base. Those attending shows bought extra copies to give as presents, and commercial success began to follow for Regina. However, it wasn’t until the release of 2003’s Soviet Kitsch that Regina came to the forefront of music. Blender declared Soviet Kitsch as having: “Traces of Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey, Björk and Cat Power are all proudly on display in the unpredictable arrangements and off-kilter emotions.”

2006’s Begin To Hope further propelled Regina to the forefront, drawing her worldwide praise, particularly in Australia. The album peaked at #20 on America’s Billboard chart and was named by Rolling Stone as the 21st best album of 2006. Thus far, Begin To Hope has sold over 500 000 copies in the US. Already certified Gold in New Zealand, Begin To Hope is close to being certified Gold in Australia as well as several European countries. Single ‘Fidelity’ landed at number 20 in Triple J’s listener-voted Hottest 100 countdown for 2006, and ‘On The Radio’ at 48 proving her impact Down Under.

The live arena sees the magic of Regina Spektor truly brought to life. Spontaneous and enchanting, an audience will never leave a Regina Spektor performance disappointed. Selling out countless shows across the United States and Europe is testament to Regina’s exquisite performances. Do not miss Regina Spektor’s debut performances in Australia and New Zealand this July.
